AL - Recording baby steps: Newest Addition

Some of those catalogs are written more carefully than a novel and I come away hungry from reading them!

How do you even decide?
By what I like? I am a vegetable fiend... I like peas, beans, corn, cukes, squash, zukes, tomatoes... everything.

By what my zone allows? I am in Florida, as long as I water I can grow pretty much anything in the spring.

by what I have had success with? LOL that narrows it down to just peas and zukes!

So I sit here and look at all of these seeds, knowing that I will want started plants from the feedstore as well. I always thought 100' x 100' would be a "huge" garden for me... now I need the whole pasture plowed up!

It is beautiful weather here today... 60*, bright blue skies, slight breeze and warm sunshine.

It's a good thing the weather is great cuz this day has been a rocky one! LOL
- went to get a haircut (@ Walmart ) and we got to talking, didn't notice til I got home that she didn't even come close to cutting my bangs enough

- went to get chicken feed and Skye's SR feed, but they are out of Skye's feed

- went to TSC to get Skye's feed and they couldn't get their computer to work, once she got it going she overcharged me for a bag of discounted BOSS so she had to fight the computer again for the refund

- home to haul in feed, discovered Buddy standing in the feed stall with his head buried in his feed barrel (he was there last night as well, had to run him out). There were feed bags, boards, buckets and Skye's blanket all over his paddock where he had dragged stuff out of the storage room


On a good note, as I did my errands I made a list of things I want to start getting for my garden. The feed stores are putting out seeding trays and other fun stuff

I hope he did not eat too much extra feed!!

We had a mare one time that consumed almost 25 pounds of chicken scratch in a single setting and it just about killed her.

Wow I bet all of that corn etc did do a number on her! I had an old mare that got into sweet feed and colicked... I won't go into the gory detail but she was very full.

I have my dad keeping an eye on him for me... goofy horse. My feed stall is now an Olympic grade obstacle course - ropes on the gates, 2x12s across from one wall to the other, locked him out of his paddock. *sigh*
I was reading this morning around 3am and heard heavy footsteps outside... it was Buddy wandering up the wheelchair ramp


My mom called today and she had gone to the doctor. She has been sick with a chest cold for a week or more.... they said she has pneumonia. She is home though, and on several meds. Hopefully they will kick in soon for her.

We had two bulls that foundered on feed. They were REALLY expensive to

He is on a pelleted "maintenance" feed rather than a sweet feed... so that is a plus. Goofy horse. I knew he could untie ropes (farrier called and said he kept getting out of his stall while they were working on Skye lol )
I planned to buy cattle panels next week to put in my garden for the chickens, but I guess I will be renovating my feed room to "buddy proof" it.

I think I need an intervention. I finally started my seed orders and I am getting a little carried away. Why do they do those silly "themed" gardens anyway? You know.. where they have a "southern garden" or "heirloom tomatoes" or "all american tastes" etc etc and they snooker you into a whole bunch of seeds instead of just that lonely packet of peas?


So now I am looking at herbs. Since I am totally new at the herb thing, should I just buy started plants? Are the seeds pretty idiot proof? And what should I start with?

my Nibbles (the goatie) got out the other day. fortunately the barn was closed so she couldnt get to the feed..but she did find the corn for the hens. stinker.

anywhoo just passing thru to say Hi!!!

as for the herbs - get them all. if anything they'll make the garden smell nice! my fav's a thyme, basil (all kinds), sage, and rosemary.

Check around with other established gardeners....do you know any oldsters who garden? You can get divisions of the perennial herbs from them for free, and they will be thrilled that you showed an interest, trust me. You can get oregano, thyme, tarragon, chives, horseradish, mints, and um.....depends on where you are. I buy a six pack of basil plants each spring, it is cheaper than a pack of seeds and fool-proof. Parsley and cilantro, too. You can start scallions and keep them going forever as long as you let a few go to seed. Hmmm....trying to picture what else I have out there....Oh, I usually buy sage plants and they last a few years before biting the dust, but last year I got seeds since I was starting the pig project and would need lots of sage for sausage, so a packet of seeds was worthwhile. And I was able to give a bunch of started plants away to a lady who had given me many divisions some years earlier, and she'd lost her sage to sloppy workmen doing some siding.
