Don't feel bad about Buford, AL. Sometimes old dogs need to be ignored, as well, how could you have known which time it was?

Yeah I just hate to hear him bark... both because it makes me worry about him and because it makes me insane!! 
So we have received "official" word that we are in a severe drought. I'm glad they let me know, because the dust covering my garden wasn't a give away.

We are going through somehting like this with our older dog. He makes it through the day just fine but wakes us up several times each night whining to go out. Not fun!

It is hard because I don't know if I feel more pity for him or for me! Last night he slept soundly without any "pharmaceutical assistance".... I, however, lay awake tense and on edge waiting for that ear shattering bark that didn't come. 
Put 6 (1)qt ziplocks of blackberries in the freezer and picked another 1/2 gallon or so. There are tons along the pasture fenceline but my back won't let me go that long
. I didn't plant my english peas early enough I guess, they are already drying up... I only got about 4 ziplocks from them, so we are just eating them!
I went ahead and bought a sprinkler for the garden, at this rate all we will have is dust for a while. It is supposed to rain tonight, but I don't have a lot of faith in it - last time it was supposed to rain we had severe weather warning, etc and didn't see a drop.
What a whiney head I have become!!! I need a day off and some dirt therapy!

I got up early this morning and set the sprinkler on the garden. Half asleep I picked it up to move it and got drenched - it was on. I was awake then!
There is like a .000004 chance of rain today and tonight, but I still wanted to get some water on the dust bowl. I think I am going to do some serious work on my soil this fall / winter. I put 2 truckloads of oak leaves on the ground this past fall, but it didn't seem to make the soil any heavier - still like powder. So maybe I will spread oak leaves, horse manure and some store bought topsoil or something. All of that only after I put something to get rid of all the cussed grass though!
While the sprinkler was on I picked another 1/2 gallon of blackberries and about the same in the last of my English peas. One of my big tomato plants is covered with tomatoes so I am anxiously awaiting that first fresh bite! YUM
I put the big flock of chickens in the backyard, gave Pat and her rebel crew (I think 4 roos in the remaining 8 chicks! yikesJ) some kitchen scraps. The winds are steady around 25-30mph so I have the rabbits inside, they don't have real shelter yet in the outside hutch. My bought chicks are still in the bathtub and the "Giant Cochins" are sure shaping up to look like Barred Rocks.... guess I'll wait until they are feathered all the way before I go pick on my feedstore lady.
Finally getting serious about measuring / counting food for my pre-op diet. My back still hurts to do much but I have started to exercise a little again. I had my lab work done on Friday - they drew 13 tubes of blood, did a chest xray and EKG.

AL, how big an area did you put the oak leaves on? It's probably better to put them thicker on a smaller area than try to spread them out. I have probably 75 trees or more in my yard. (They're small) I don't know how many truck loads of leaves I actually get from them, but the leaves don't go any place but in my garden.

Don't you have a horse?? For the past two years that is all I have added to my planters. And two are probably all composted horse poop. Its nice and composted and that's pretty much all I plant in. Do you add that?
