Not much going on - had another bout of chick excitement yesterday. Found a pipped egg, the little chick had made about a dime sized hole but it was now full of ants. I took it and cleaned them out the best I could, chipping away some at the shelt until I got the ants out. I put the egg under my broody Buff Orp and went to work. When I came back 4hrs later, the egg was rolled out in the middle of the chicken house, cold as if it were in the fridge and the chick taking agonal gasps of air. I took it inside, cleared out ants again, peeled away a little more shell and then it started bleeding. I wrapped it loosely in paper towels, covered it with a wet paper towel, set it pretty close to a red heat lamp and zipped away to work again. When I went home again (4 hours later) there was definite progress, teh chick was almost out of the egg - and finally when I got home from work "for real" I have what I think must be officially the cutest chick ever - and the toughest!! (and it has the Easter Egger beard and Brahma feathered legs!!)
Pullet or Roo, this little one has a home here! Forgive the blurry cell phone pics
Cuteness!!
I took Rio to the ortho vet today... my vet's estimate was way off, but I have the money set aside so we are moving forward. He will have his surgery on June 7. My vet will provide a lot of the stuff much cheaper (somethings even free) so that will help with the total costs. I paid off a loan and 2 credit cards today and put some money in savings, so hopefully this will work out ok.
It is VERY unseasonably cool here and I love it! Last night it was in the 40's, today it is 71* - our normals are lows around 71 and highs around 87!~ Woot!!!
The garden seems to be doing better without me tending it LOL. I have several tomatoes ripening and some more corn stalks coming up. I picked the last 5 peaches today - a squirrel or rat has been knocking them out of the tree and snacking on them.
