You can train your dog not to chase chickens. We have, lots of ppl have. Just google Cesar Milan --thta is the method we used , even before I knew who Cesar milan was. I don't have time to post more about it right now, but if you have questions, let me know.

Yeah I may have to train him some. When I went down there he was acting weird and I brought a shovel scoop in and while I picked up the bird. I chewed him up one side and down the other. It was so bad that he hide behind the dog house....

Sorry for the loss of your hen

Now ... not fair to punish the dog. Remember a while back there was a chicken in his pen and he didn't mess with it? That was fair warning.
take the lesson and run with it... clip wings and cover the dog pen. If he was out chasing them or breaking into their pen it would be one thing, but this was just a predator being a predator (or a dog playing with a really cool flappy squeaky toy - whichever fits your dog).


I may have to have some fresh home chicken too! Gotta start working through those meats in the freezer!

My dog loved playing with those really cool flappy squeaky toys. She got hold of three altogether. nearly killed one and actually killed one. I trained her not to chase them. It was a bit of work, but now she knows better and helps protect them, even from each other.

Sorry for your loss. It sucks loosing a hen.

What sort of a dog is it? Breed has a lot to do with tendencies to kill small livestock. I know hunting dogs are the worst... You said you had labs? Well, I'm one to talk, I've never had this problem before. So sorry about your hen!

oh they can definitely be "reformed" .... my lab killed 5 of my neighbor's chickens as a pup (10wks - a year) when they flew over into my backyard. He is great with mine.... my fave EE "Stink" used to jump up on his back to be closer to me with the treats, and one of my psycho Buff Orpingtons chases him / pecks him. Rio just looks at me like "They are really trying me now".

I have a rottweiler who lets the chickens walk on him, and a wirehaired pointing griffon, the best (IMO) hunting dog, both dogs have been trained to leave the chickens and ducks etc alone. the rotty wangts to herd the larger animals though.

BB, I wouldn't sweat it. Fix the kennel where the crazy chickens cannot fly in. At my house, its fly in at your own risk deal.... . At least you can contain your predator. My dear beloved rooster Jackson decided last week he didn't like one of my hens,...so he took her out of this world. I found her dead in the lot and him covered in blood,..He was on death row and bound for the crock pot, but I gave him a day or two to see what he was going to do. He hasn't botherd anymore of them and all seems well with the flock. Go figure??
