Best foodstuff to stockpile?

Sounds like the one I checked out -- yep, can't go there!:old
Just didn't seem cost effective for me, as a single, to spend it. While it's a great idea, that's something a "community" needs to buy & share.

That's about what I saw, Britesea. That's why I'm saving my pennies!
I agree, Mini Horses, other people have suggested that - four or five families could go in together and easily purchase one. I follow a group on Facebook that freeze dries, and the savings that most of these folks talk about would be worth it to someone, even a single person, to have. The challenge is finding the funds to afford it in the first place so that you can start saving! The company I'm interested in has a great layaway plan, and after you've paid around $2000 they ship you the machine anyway, and let you keep making payments. That's pretty cool, but still a lot of money!

If anybody is on facebook there is a really great group that's really active for the Harvest Right Freeze Dryers. There are some super knowledgeable people there and a lot of information. Only place that I know of to get info reliably.

This last one is exactly what we do what woodmaster said. We have a 2 yr. supply of food..and barrels of water outside. Won't be great for drinking, but for using in other ways. Could be used for drinking if boiled. It's been out there a while. We could change it..but, Inside, we have several containers of water, even a small blue barrel for drinking.
And yes, we have dogs. So having extra is a really good idea. Of course, dogs don't mind you sharing your food if you have some extra..and no doggy food. Chickens? They will have to fend for themselves. I don't have a supply for them. :/ I would want their eggs, and if needed, we could eat them of course. Rather have the eggs. ;)

Chickens & goats are my #1 for food production. Great protein, easy to maintain as they eat/forage "crap" type food. They produce daily & with multi functional food. Think about it.

A garden is great, orchards for fruit/nuts, water source. But chickens & goats really provide with what may be the least input & do the work of keeping it fresh/contained, also. Daily milk & eggs -- multi uses, excellent food composition. Easily handled.
