It's Tuesday March 5th and there is still some snow on the ground. But here I am watching the weather like a hawk, just waiting for a window to get my hands dirty in the garden.

I took 1/2 day off work Thursday March 7th to set out my "seedlings" into my spring garden. I'm taking my chances with the weather guessers.

I got to at least get the onions and broccoli planted. I can't raise the lights up any higher on the bottom row of my seedling table.

Depending on how fast my daughter and I can work, I would like to get the cauliflower cabbages and brussels (middle row) planted also. Its a lot to set out in a afternoon though. But its beyond time to set the babies free.

I'm one sick puppy that's been smitten by the gardening bug.

I was going to keep the 1/2 flat of onions for green onions. But that still small voice told me, I should take them to our Amish friends. So I did along with 1/2 flat of broccoli. In return I have a very joyful feeling that has come over me. I'm sure a lot of you here know exactly what I'm talking about. Their 6 children are so cute.

Southern IL spring rains have begun. We had a lot of rain overnight and until this afternoon. But my Aquatic Engineering Degree from the Hillbilly School of Hard Knocks has paid off. It saved my garden, Billies 1, strong thunder storms 0 :)

The second year after we moved here sugar creek which is right behind my gardens became sugar pond then sugar lake. It flooded out both of my gardens :(. I walked the creek and found 2 beaver dams. I wasn't the only one with problems... So 6 of us Billies got a hold of some dynamite and blew those beaver dams to kingdom come. Haven't had a problem since, sugar creek is flowing nicely after the big rains today, again Billies 1, beavers 0 :)

I think you experienced a little mini cyclone. How cool is that! I don't think it was an angel. We are surrounded by the spiritual realm, both good and evil. But, when angelic presence appeared in the Bible, it was usually for direct communication with the person(s) they had been sent to visit. In a quick search of the scriptures regarding angels, they almost always appeared in human form. Then, there's this verse: Hebrews 13:2 Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Again, human form, such that an angel can't be discerned from any other person you might meet on the street.

You're a lot braver than me! I"m behind about two weeks on my plants. The broccoli and cabbage are just now sprouting. I like to wait a little longer I guess.

Just crazy is all... Who do you know who sets out hardy non-hardened off transplants when there is still snow on the ground? Only me... well my high stakes gamble paid off, rabbits and all :) sometimes you win, other times you loose.

April 14 - like every southern IL spring, its wet, wet, wet... In order to avoid flooding out my seedlings, I have to hill up rows and create trenches to drain off excess rain fall.

Long view looking south

Looking west - direct sowed left to right, kale, romaine lettuce, 2 rows beets & 2 rows spinach.
IMG_20190414_143335358.jpg

2 rows each (transplants) Brussels, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli
IMG_20190414_143357447.jpg

2 rows onion transplants & 2 rows carrots direct sow.

Need to get in there and thin out the direct sows, fertilize, cultivate the weeds in between the rows and lay down some straw. I'll get to all that, once it dries out enough to get in there.
