You needed those CCX. Winter is cold, nasty weather. If you didn't have the CCX to keep you busy keeping them fed, watered and alive, you might get bored!
I reckon... I'll put them on 12h on 12h off feed schedule with 24h water and Bragg's ACV. This schedule seemed to work well in the past. It's keeping them warm that I'm a little concerned about. I guess I'll run a space heater and 250 watt heat lamp for them.

Ferment their feed. They will drink less water, eat a little less and the meat tastes better. I keep 4-6 small buckets with lids going at a time when I raise them. I usually have 30-50 of them. I start the buckets off with a live culture buttermilk and always leave some to start the next batch. I put in the feed and add water.

I'm gonna try this next time

no corners. corners are a bad deal for them. they also pile up if the lamp is too hot

You are absolutely right about corners. But I never thought about heat lamps being to hot. This time I put in two heat lamps and spaced them apart where the edges of the circles overlap slightly.

Supposed to get down to 30 degrees overnight. I suspect if piling is going to happen, it will overnight. Hopefully I won't have any dead meaties tomorrow morning.

I just decided to leave their feed tonight. It's already 35 outside and if I open the door to grab their feed, it's just gonna blast cold air into their coop.
