CheerioLounge - Desert Dreamin'

I'm getting to where I'm sick of wind. It seems to be a lot windier anymore than it used to be. Glad you were able to secure it all down.

I have a very strong dislike of wind (being a wood/earth person it makes perfect sense of course), and we're up here on the top of a hill and it is yucky. I think MD winters are pretty darn windy. Thankfully the trailer is situated so that the wind blows down the long axis and doesn't hit the face of the house.

Glad you were able to salvage it! Nothing worse than wind un-doing all your efforts and destroying it in the process!

I shared your windy day yesterday... ended up staying inside most of the day watching the eucalyptus dance violently and crossing my fingers that no big branches fall on the house (I moved the cars out of the way).

I feel your pain re: wind. Agh.

While we were building this place, we picked up various things from the adjoining field every stinking weekend. Okay, maybe not EVERY weekend, but it just felt like it.

We had a freak straight line wind a few months ago that rolled our 5 year old roof shingles back like a big ol' carpet. That really sucked. It even yanked our skylight out of the roof. And of course, it was the roof on the second story. It was two or three weeks before the roofers could get out here, so we'd lay in bed on windy nights... listening....dreading.....the tarps on the roof hung in there.

Remind yourself that every time the crap hits the fan, you have something here to tell us and eventually, it's just a great story and a memory. :D

That is just plain a good way to look at the unavoidable fact of life's crap. I like it.

Marianne you are such a ray of sunshine!! Thanks! And you're right... I couldn't wait to sign on and tell y'all about it! :caf

On a different note - I see that you chose rhode island reds. How did you go about choosing the breed of chickens you did? What do you like about them and what do you wish were different?

Hi Kelly!

We sort of lucked into our chickens. We happened to be at the feed store to buy chicks, but they didn't have any. A woman on the other side of town had just bought a dozen chicks from the feed store when her husband passed. She decided to move in with one of her kids, so she had to get rid of the chickens. She had posted a flyer at the feed store, we called her and she still had 10 left. We raced right over. By the time we got there there were only 5 left and we took them. $20! And she threw in a tray feeder, 2 qt jar waterers and a cage to get them home in! They were about 5 weeks old.

I have been very happy with my girls. They started laying at about 20 weeks and right up until the days got shorter, I got an egg every day from each of them. They still give me at least 3 a day now. They withstood the heat of summer very well. I would consider getting them again as starter birds. They seem to be very hardy. They are hatchery birds, I'm sure, so they are probably what are called "production reds." I want to "spice up" the flock a little and add some different "heat tolerant" birds. I've been checking out the hatchery offerings on line, but I will probably end up getting half a dozen of what the feed store has to offer. I noticed the other day that the "we have chickens" sign was out! I would hope they would only order in breeds that do well in this environment. I would love to get 1 rooster and if they have a breed that is more prone to broodiness, I would love to have a dependable broody. I gotta get my rear in gear and expand my run! :weee

edited cuz I can't speel :P

Just came in from collecting eggs. 5 for 5 today!! :ya That makes 15 in 5 days, not bad!

Somebody is going to be baking like a fool when he gets home from the market tomorrow!! :weee
