So, yesterday I had someone stop by the house and talk about how pretty my hens were. It really bothered me to be honest. I feel like my rabbits and chickens might be in danger. Right now, this place is not the most defendable. It's close to the road. Luckily, it's protected somewhat by geography on three sides.

We have a dog inside that let's you know when something is up. I also have a gander that is a fairly good watchdog, and we have a German Shepherd in a Kennel. I have guns, and pack regularly.

Any other thoughts on security?

Yeah...get that GSD out of the kennel and into an wireless invisible fence system that encompasses the area on the side of the house most easily accessible. Its not doing you much good in a kennel and the dog will enjoy the space to run. Mine covers a half acre of land in a big circle, just need to place the transmitter box somewhere in the middle of the area you want to cover.

i'm so glad i got the gap in the fence closed off the other day along the north part where people and other critters are most likely to come through. working on redoing the fence across the back for the next few days, week or whatever it takes to get it done. it may not be a super strong fence but at least it will slow down anyone who wants to get nasty from those directions...

BB fence your place, gate across driveway, deepset for truck and trailer. Then turn your dog loose. A thief is a murderer of your labor.

I have very spikey thorny bushes along most of my fences. Anyone who doesn't know their way around my garden would get a nasty spike. Bougainvillea at the corner and oleander along the back side. I have a firethorn type along the kitchen side of the house (a bit out of control to be honest) and near the front gate (less out of control cos it gets full sun). It is NOT a child safe garden but each plant was obviously put in its spot for a reason. The previous owners also put planks of wood with nails sticking up along the highway side woodshed. Pretty sure that is illegal, but I didn't do it, it was already there and too high for me to change myself

There is a very nasty type bush in the drain which I was going to clear out until I realised it kept wild rabbits and snakes out of the drain. Now I just know now to touch it at all, its not invasive but if a spike tip gets in the skin, its very hard to remove and feels like a bee sting. The house itself is a fortress, most secure place I have ever lived in and because I am right in town, the neighbours look out for each other. The theft crime is much worse on the farms cos no one is watching. I have heard stories of entire flocks of sheep being nicked in the night - before the pandemic!

Mum sent me an email this morning, sort of sad that restrictions are being lifted. We liked this quiet way of life.

I am still looking for a new place, but the shot gun is always loaded. Eventually, I want to get a better handle on spacing and planning entries and exits to my property.

I agree. I am financially solid, and I think prices will go down. So, I am ready and waiting!

Buying your own place is the best thing you can do. Then you can build what you want the way you want it. You can buy land and put up a one room house with plans for expansion on both ends. Pay as you go. Don't forget to scrounge for materials. Lowes has a reject rack for lumber, you can get it for half price or less. Businesses that receive freight-it often comes in shipping crates. Airconditioners come in wooden shipping crates and so on...….Look for construction sites, they throw away perfectly good lumber, get permission to riffle through the big roll off boxes.

That is my plan almost exactly. I am going to build a small cabin as I can afford it with the ability to add on. I might never get married, or I may get married next year and be blessed to have eight kids.
