yea I thought the same.
doesn't the city have to fix it and bill you for your normal usage of water on average? I wouldn't think you would have to foot any bill for this?

I believe it's dependent on where the leak is.... At my parents house 8 feet from their curb is considered city property when talking water. Unless you're talking about paving the entire front yard and putting a toilet in front with flowers in it and a sign that says keep OKC beautiful. Ask me how I know

The city kept on giving my Dad citations for his car being parked in the grass....but the "grass" was their actual driveway, it just wasn't paved at the time, so he called and threatened to do that every time they gave him a warning or citation.They finally stopped because he finally got a hold of someone who agreed that it was actually the driveway space, paved or not....most of the yard is paved now No toilet 
Anywho theoretically if it's on what the city considers the city's property, like AT their meter or main, then yes it's the city's responsibility. But if it's on Dacs property or it's not their main, it's his, and he's got to pay for it. That's how it works here anyway.

We are fortunate to have "city" water but they only go a short distance onto private property. From the meter on is the property owner's responsibility.
It would have cost us as much to have a well drilled as it did to have city water. I was leery of a well because of the rock formations here. It is fractured limestone and sandstone with quite a few old wells. We also live near a quarry with blasting. I just didn't feel good about well water. When I was inspecting wells one of the drillers told me about finding walnuts in the well water of one of the wells. The only way it could have gotten there was from fractures in the rock. That means surface water was making its way to the well. Surface water means contamination.

Hopefully our well water wont kill us lol The Environmental Quality people test ours b/c it was required for a VA loan. We filter our water anyway just to be safe.

Hey Dac - Maybe you should buy your wife a new shovel to dig up that water line with. And if she has wireless internet she can IM you from her new laptop when she finds it. 
Really sounds like this is going to be a major problem for you. Hope you can find it without to much problem but sounds like lots of digging to me. Not to mention all that water usage on your bill, living with cutting the water on and off outside to keep from using so much until you find the leak.
Just a thought here. Since you do have the leak, and are going to have to do some digging anyway at some point, would it be possible to install some cutoff valves along the way so if it ever happens again you could shut off water to different sections so next time you could at least know what area the leak would be in?
Hope there will never be a next time but.....

Boy, do I know about the cost of a well. We built our house 12 years ago. City water wasn't available at the time. My dad's well is less than 200 ft deep and is maybe 150 yards from us. So, we budgeted for about $2,500.
At less than 200 ft, we hit solid rock. That went on for 400 more feet. My DH told the drillers to put one more stick on. We hit a river of good water at 450ish feet. We used the rock that came out to gravel our driveway. Needless to say, we blew our budget.

We worked on the water line today. Found the line and put a ball valve in it. This served to start to isolate the leak. Tomorrow is put in another valve to narrow down the leak some more. Then we might just uncover the line until we find the leak. About 100 yards worth.
