I got it Wifezilla, a conservative verses liberal kinda thing. Never even thought of that when starting this thread. Not sure how that fits in with emergency prepardeness, but i guess theres a niche in there somewhere for the right and the left..:) I absolutely have a thing about water though...! Gotta have enough of that around, and clean water at that..not sea water, fresh drinking/livestock/crop water, high priority.I think i'd feel like a dried up raisin living in Texas...lol They got some serious wildfires going on
there right now..!

We like where our home is located in Wisconsin. We have 35 acres. The only thing we don't like right now is the political climate and lack of jobs. My husband is working in Eau Claire which is 90 miles west of here. He has an apartment and comes home on weekends. We are trying to get out of the lease because our greyhound has arthritis in both her front and back left legs. His apartment is an upper flat. Once we can get into a different apartment, I will be heading out there (unless I find a job here first). We have had an abnormally snowy winter, but that happens.

When I bought my land here in Ca all I could picture was the perfect hobby farm.. I realize now that to pasture raise animals 2 acres is not quite enough. :p

I do manage quite a bit here and the growing season is wonderful.

But......

Taxes are high
Cost of living is high
Population density is not quite to my liking
Earthquake zone
nuclear power plant
tsunami??

We are hoping that we can time an exit with the housing market and make out ok. Right now that wont happen.

I hear you Tankshill, same here ,high taxes, high cost of living, population density, nukes.I own my home, its just not the right time to sell and buy what i really want.I could sell, but i don't want to give the place away cheap..! If i had the cash, now would be a great time to buy something, but its not that way.I have 1 1/2 acre here with noisey neighbors to close for comfort....I'm dying for some peaceful breathing room..!!!

Ya know Kev, every place has its pros and cons. I have lived in NE Ohio all my life. I do complain about the winters and lousy sports teams, but it's HOME. My family has roots here. Some folks have had more mobility in their life than me - moving for a loved one, job, running from something at home, etc. That's the greatness of this country, we have the freedom to follow our dreams. We just need to determine for ourselves if the cost of the move right now is something we want to pay.

My FIL has lived in places all over the country in his 75 years and for the 20 years I've known him, he complains about all of them. :D

I apologize, right now I can't remember whose siggie it is, but its saying bloom where you are planted. I'll make do where ever I end up.

Texas has some very hot, dry areas. It also has some very wet humid areas. Plus it has many micro-climate areas in between.

I know people automatically think of tumbleweeds and dried out cow skulls when they think of Texas, but that is only parts of it. Just like everyone thinks of snow covered mountains when they think of Colorado. Actually we have quite a bit of it covered in tumbleweeds and dried out cow skulls....

I can never move to a state that doesn't recognize my partnership, so the red states are out for me!
I can totally understand that. Of course, being a libertarian atheist, I don't know if Texas wants me, but I would rather deal with the wacko church people than the wacko socialists. You just pull the "free will" card on the church people and they wonder off muttering.*

*Now if you are religious, don't do getting your panties in a wad. I said WACKO religious people and you know who I am talking about! I don't put plain old god-fearing folk in the same category. If you ARE a wacko church person, "free will! free will! free will!" So there :D

I know chickenone, not much here either on eastern long island,ny.Construction and comm. fishing, our mainstay's for yrs is all but dried up.The Hamptons is a big resort area, but with big gas prices and a poor economy, the resort biz is suffering as well...The way i figure it,if you sell your home that you own free and clear, and pay for your new place of equal value or less, you don't need a whole lot. Property taxes are the likey biggest annaul hit.Sure you gotta have some kind of income. However, no mortgage is a big monkey off your back...! Lets face it, its tough everywhere these days if you haven't already gotten your nest eggs saved..! Maine has alot of poor elderly, i was surprised to find its a rather large welfare state.Even so, it has alot of good to offer... FarmerJames you are so right, about every place has its pros and cons. It's a pick your own poison/pleasure thing for sure. But its sure interesting picking peoples brains on the topic...lol

:yuckyuck

I like it here and wouldn't want to move. We are pretty close to several towns so we have a nice job pool to draw from (drive north higher pay but live south with lower cost of living). We get a little snow most winters (a LOT of snow about once a decade), a good growing season, in the country, we have hills (which is big for me - I grew up in swampland, though I do miss the vistas from time to time), we have trees that change color in the fall (didn't have that growing up but once every 5 years or so) and gets hot enough in the summer that you pray for winter. Another advantage - I live far enough away from family that they have to plan to come, but close enough that they can.
