Lovin' The Homestead
I LOVE where I am! The only thing I don't like is the fact that because of the long, cold winters I can't grow as much as I would like. But you can live off the land, it just may take more work and be less variety.
Alaska is really a love it or hate it place. I love it because of it's beauty, it's freedom, it's larger conservative population, and it's wildness. Alaska also has a more stable economy then other states not only because of the natural resources she has, but also because of the large government and military population.
I was born in Washington State, and lived there until I was 9. I have lived in Florida for 9 months, and California for a year. Each state has it's pluses, but the negatives outweigh the positives in each of those states for me.
When I first left Alaska and moved to FL for college when folks asked if I missed Alaska, and I said not a bit! But as I lived there longer, saw part of the hot season, and saw the political and economic status, I began to long for Alaska again. I was very excited when we moved back up 3 years ago, and we plan to stay if that is the Lord's will for us.
ETA: Only 45 minutes out of town and no property taxes. There are no shopping taxes (at least not in Fairbanks). In the 'burbs the only thing we CAN'T do on our property is build a prison. I haven't bought meat or fish except for the occasional treat of something we aren't making ourselves, like pepperoni or bacon. Small town atmosphere, lots of outdoor activities for most of the year.......

I spent 40 years roaming the world. I came to South Dakota and have never looked back. Yes, the winters are very long here but there are problems with every place you go.
I didn't pick the place for the geography or the seafood (there isn't much to be had here you know). I picked here because of the people. This place IS the America I GREW UP BELIEVING IN and I am so happy to be here. Lived in California...won't go back. Lived in Virginia...the people are horrid there...still fighting the Civil War and all they want is for you to leave your money and go away. If you weren't born there, they don't recognize your existence.
Been to Maine. Nice place. I could work there but the folks with no jobs are struggling to stay alive. They don't need more folks to take up the available resources.

Arizona is nice high in the mountains, but so is New Mexico...like in the Chama area way up at the 10,000 foot level.
Utah is a big desert with mountains on the one side and a culture based on one specific religion...not that this is bad but if you don't belong to it, your way of life will vary from the "norm" by magnitudes of order.
Minnesota is cold, flat and other than spotted with many lakes, all of which are inhabited by city folks who like to make rules, it is a great choice. Lived in Wisconsin for 10 years. I often think that if for any reason I would leave SDAK I'd go back to Wisconsin. I could go on but you get the idea. I don't really ever want to cross the Mississippi ever again.

I actually like northern Missouri pretty darned well, but if I were to move it would be to eastern Kansas. I love the prairie, the wind power, and the attitudes of the people that I have met.
Of course if I moved there I would actually be moving CLOSER to a nuc plant.
For me that would still NOT be the deciding factor.

Yes, I have spent a good bit of time traveling through Texas. They have prairies, and even SWAMPS in addition to the tumbleweed and cow skulls. Texas is a BIG place.

Improvising a more SS life
I fell in love with Hot Springs, Ar about 20 years ago when me and the hubby were passing through traveling. We moved here ASAP. I moved away later and missed it enough to move back. I will eventually get some land but want to stay fairly close. This part of the state has fairly mild winters, beautiful mountains, lots of trees, good water and seasons.
The Ouachita mountains protect us from lots of the nastier storms and tornadoes. The updraft from the mountains makes most tornadoes skip over the town.
Some parts of the state get more nasty weather.
Summers here are too humid for some people, but I grew up in Fla, so I was already used to it.
I lived in NE Ohio for my first 5 years and visited later. It was really pretty and had nice summers, but harsher winters than I want.
Colorado - Beautiful scenery and some really great people. But I scrambled for the exit when winter came. Whew!
Fla. - Lived there for 30 + years and it can be really pretty. Mild winters and I planted 2 food gardens yearly with a break in the hottest part of summer. I like heat, so that worked for me.
Hurricane season can be scary and was part of why I came back to Arkansas.
The cost of living was high and lots of the jobs were low paying. Much of the population was struggling when the economy was still good. I doubt that will get better soon.
Georgia - I stayed in a little town about 25 miles from Macon. Pretty there, but economically nothing. I think 1/2 the county was on food stamps. Lots of the ones that were working were driving to Macon for work. It could have worked for somebody with a retirement income that wanted to grow a good garden.

Since I am from WI originally, this really made me laugh. Colorado winters where I am, though long, are incredibly whimpy compared to that narsty -30 stuff you get for weeks on end in the great white north.

I was used to living in the south. Where people brag about seeing snow if A snowflake hits their nose once a winter. We had to leave fast. I was not prepared for my 1st blizzard and it was on the way. (we were already moving back home anyway)
The third snow of the season was about 5 inches deep while we were packing up the vehicle to leave. It was only mid November, so I didn't want to find out what the rest of winter would be like.
I'll just visit Wisconsin in the summertime.

I've lived in Maine all my life. Never lived anywhere else and honestly don't care too. Visited many other States thought. I'm a Norseman at heart and blood,so cold is a must. I love that we have the 4 seasons here. Yes you hear the jokes about our mud season but it's not that bad. As long as ya have 4 wheel drive, life is good. I live on an island now. I miss the lakes and fresh water but love the seafood life here. Nice to be able to go across the road and get a peck of clams or call my buddy up who just got in from lobstering for some lobsters.
I am self employeed and work is hard up here for sure. It's taken me a while to get my business to a consistant level and work hard to make my clients happy. Yes a lot of my clients are summer and part time residents. That's just the way it is on the coast now. Trades and fishing is it. I only work 8 months out of the yr and we make those 8 months count. Maine people wrk hard that;s a fact. We have our share of loafer but most people are hard working and would give you the shirt off there back.
Honestly it takes a certain person to live up here and I'm talking about the real Maine. Not the Southern Maine. Once you get past Brunswick and Augusta your almost into the real Maine. The Southern Maine is Northern Massachussettees we say and southern Mainers suck. Always trying to tell us Northerns whats best. Most of them are just transplants anyway.
Winters are long and hard. Lack of sun and things to do. I do here we are getting a new Casino up near Greenville. That'll suck. I've been to Foxwoods and Moheagun Sun. Only bad things will come of it here. Another raping of the poor and Corp colinization of Maine.
Anyway I hope I didn't sound to ant-transplant or leave your money in Maine and leave attitude but I see a lot of tourist every yr and the majoirty of them are disrespectful of what is up here and who the real natives are. Maine is a treasure and should be treated as such and when people come up here on vacations your ON VACATION so WHY ALL THE STRESS CAP!!! Please stop driving 10 miles an hr and stopping in the middel of the road to watch the deer or moose. Some of us still have to work and make a living here. If I did that in your state or city you'd flip out on me too.
