the pigs seem pretty smart. before the cold front we broke up a bail of staw in the pen. they dragged most of it to the covered aread and made a nest. View attachment 18102

Better keep a big stick by the back door so your wife doesn't have to go hunting for one. You have yet to experience how smart those.piggies are. I give the chicken and welded wire 3 to 4 weeks. 😂

they tried to dig out last night. had some pretty good holes that we had to fill with bricks. been working on the pen today. getting close.

we also noticed the small boar was trying to mount the sow....so i called a biddy over and we castrated him. neither of us had done it before so it was an experience. luckily hes a big guy and we were able to hog tie the pig. lol time for a coffee break

Wow that’s one way to learn! You’re brave. We’ve had pigs for years and never castrated them ourselves.

I don't mind castrating the little guys - but I'd be terrified to do a big one. I'd be afraid he'd hold a grudge, lol!

John Seymour claims that pigs are noble, smart animals and have a place on all small holdings because they are useful at converting all kitchen scraps and garden wastes into fertile soil or methane in a digester and for tilling the ground before you plant the potatoes.
As for potbellies, DH found someone who wanted to give away 5 of them so he took a trip and returned home with them. He then told me he heard the previous owner tell them they were going to a better place 😂. We put them in a 10X10 kennel until they got out. We were able to herd in 4 and I had to go to my sisters house. I returned and DH was scraping the one we hadn’t caught. 😂. He then gave me the head and organ meats, which I used to make hog head cheese in a large crockpot.
What impressed me the most was that we didn’t need to call for outside help for the slaughter or cooking. It was small enough that we handled it alone. A 400Lb pig would have been an occasion to call the family over. I told DH that as we get older this is the only kind of pig I want to consider. Think…bantam swine.
