I just popped over from BYC. :)

I hail from Ozark Highlands stock, generations of "preparedness" being ingrained into the very fabric of my soul. My passions include organic gardening/farming, wildcrafting and hedgerow harvesting, putting food by, seed saving of heirloom veg, and preserving heritage breeds of livestock and poultry.
I'm looking forward to sharing ideas and "meeting" everyone!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Right now I've dual purpose registered Tennessee Fainting goats, English Orpingtons to British Standards, show quality Narragansett turkeys and quail. I've been working with the quail for five years and developed a line where the hen broods, hatches and rears her own young. I used to raise and show Standard Chinchilla rabbits, but the travelling was insane. I've just one Palomino rabbit now, though he's a pet and producer of garden fertiliser. Up until a few years ago I also raised Welsh Harlequin ducks according to original Welsh Standard of Perfection. Alas, a mink tunnelled in and dispatched them all and I've yet to find any of adequate quality with which to replace them. Once upon a time I also had hedgehogs. Those started me into raising mealworms and after the hedgies passed one, I've continued to raise the mealworms which I now feed to the chooks as the extra protein and fat helps get them through our long, cold winters.

Oh wow...., I like you, you have a wide variety of interests. Yeah I mentioned getting into exotic pets, thanks for the heads up on that tort!! MY friend does hedgehogs now, and that's how that came up in conversation. I'm more interested in rodents at the moment

Nice! We have Chocolate turkeys, Dominiques and just started with Dorkings. Also two heritage mixed breed turkey hens (Blue Slate and we think Black Spanish). We currently have mini alpine goats and Old Spot cross pigs. I've been thinking about finding a heritage goat breed... But haven't found "the one" yet lol.

@OzarkCountryGirl Satin cavies was one of the breeds my MIL created, as well as Teddy, Crested, and Crested Teddy. When she finally retired, she was working on a Crested Satin (she was having trouble fixing the white spot though)

Welcome to SS :frow Lovely to have you over here! It sounds like you'll have a lot of interesting things to share with (and teach some of) us.
