It is a green herb used often in Mexican cooking.

The seed it produces is coriander, but the green herb has a much different flavor.

Here in the US coriander is the seed of cilantro, and cilantro is the leaf. The two parts of the plant have a VERY different flavor.

I'm one of those who thinks that cilantro tastes like a very strong industrial cleaning fluid. I use parsley instead in any recipe calling for cilantro. But apparently it is a very popular herb.... lots of people love it.

Yes, and a little goes a long way, too. I personally can't stand the stuff, but it's a common ingredient in a lot of areas.
Right there with ya, Marianne. :sick

I think it's used in some Italian dishes, too. My SIL loves it. :p

Yeah, I'm one of those people that LOVE cilantro! :hide Never thought of substituting parsley, for my friends that don't enjoy it as much as I do...

Cilantro is DELICIOUS....but only to those with a certain gene. I am lucky enough to have the "cilantro = good" gene. My hubby has the "cilantro tastes like soap!!!" gene :D

As Free said, if you can't get cilantro, try using regular parsley.

They often have dried cilantro at the grocery store, but the flavor of dried is pretty pathetic.

I am another that LOVES fresh Cilantro.
I have to agree that the flavor of the stuff they call Cilantro in the store is pretty bland compared to fresh.
