We are having some rain today. I think in So Cal that justifies staying home. Well that and gas prices are reason enough for me.

It is horrible here. DH is working from home. He wouldn't even be able to get out of our driveway with how high some of the drifts are. The dogs don't even want to go outside.

Last year was not a good year for spring gardening mostly due to the weather. Summer either, for that matter. I also had bugs and weeds that I couldn't keep up with. Now that the goats are where the weed beds/garden beds were, I am looking at my property differently and coming up with new ideas. How fun is that?
First, I'm going to do some containers for greens and a few tomatoes. Our soil seems to have some tomato diseases in it so I need at least a couple plants that won't need to be torn out by August. I can put them in the front yard where the goats and ducks won't get them. Plus if my autoimmune stuff flares and I can't be out in the heat I'll at least have a little something that's not as much work.

I think I'll try broccoli and kale one more time in the bed where the tomatoes were last year.

The bare area way out back might get tilled up for the bigger things, but it will need to be fenced due to wild animals. We'll see how much energy I have for that.

I think my asparagus got washed away in the floods. They have been worse than expected the last couple of winters I don't have another good spot for it.

Onions can go along the chicken fenceline. Peppers and green beans too. And I'll put swiss chard everywhere since it has proven nearly indestructible in our soil.

That leaves cucumbers. Last year they did so well that they took over the yard and that was a mess. They ate the pathetic trellis and were snaking through the grass and growing through the fence. Made it very hard to find the cukes until they grew to the size of baseball bats Found out we stink at building a suitable trellis. I know - it should be simple, right? A sturdy piece of fencing and some posts. It just hasn't worked out for us. I'll keep trying.

I wish a couple of our trees had gotten taken out by the ice storm. They are shading what could be great areas for berries and fruit trees. Maybe someday.

What kind of trees are they? If the bark is soft, and not harmful to goats, they could always just escape, and eat the bark off. Then the tree would die, and you'd have to take it out.

Maple, huge maple trees. And they are in the front of the house where no goat will be allowed ever. Too much traffic and prying eyes.

Oh well, it was worth a try. Of course, you could tap them, and make your own syrup.

Spring gardening wasn't too great here either last year. I guess that's the fun and challenge of it all, coming up with new ideas!
