Bee, this has to be the most profound post I've read in the last year. Thank you so very much for these wise words.

Agreed, @Beekissed . If anyone had life saving meds needed, their time will be short. Discussing a SHTF scenario, my BIL boasted, we have land and cattle. When I mentioned everyone in the area knows you do. How will you defend it all?

We discussed this book here years ago.

Looks like it might be a good read. Have you read the "Left Behind" series?

Sometimes, when I'm putting some more filled jars on my shelves, I wonder who will be living in this house and eating this food. Will it be me and my family? Or someone that comes along and finds an empty, overlooked house?

I can't add much to this conversation as the possibility of something like that happening here, the way things are going and have been going for some years now, is very slim. So I never thought of it and "what if"... That said, this is a good conversation topic with good (and sobering) thoughts expressed here!

It's not exactly likely to happen here either!

When we moved into this house in 2010, I found old canned goods in a closet. As they weren't labeled, dated or anything, I thought it best to feed them to the dump.

good idea if you aren't starving. If I was starving and I found a cache, I'd probably try to eat them anyway. If you boil stuff for 15 minutes or so, it's supposed to neutralize the toxins from botulinum (the bacteria themselves get wiped out when they hit the hydrochloric acid in your stomach)
