i would NOT recommend getting doelings, feeding them out a year, breeding them, over wintering them and THEN finding out if they will milk or not. spend a little extra to find out immediately if you even like it - some people dont want to be 'tied down' by milking. but honestly, where's anybody gonna go when gas is so expensive. its cheap entertainment and keeps you out of the malls

Thanks for the advice on the goats. We have the space for a couple cows but the land is part wooded so no good grass/pasture :( But it would be so nice to have some awesome fresh cream/milk!

glenolam- How do you butcher your beef cows? Does someone pick them up for you or do you take them somewhere? Just wondering.

Javamama- Not so irrational, it is a 1200 lb animal!!

Free- I would love a little fawn Jersey cow too!! And 1-2 gallons of cream a day! ......mmmmmm... fresh ice cream, sour cream, yogurt, cream cheese....

ohio- Thanks again for the advice, that goat would have to wait if it was time for me to buy some of my high-dollar Mac lipgloss but that's about the only reason I would be in a mall! ;)
 
I would still get mini cows if I had the option (and the land and the money). Sure the goats are cute, but bulls aren't stinky!!!

I am not a goat meat fan. I love cows milk and grass fed beef. I don't have room for either, but in my dream world, it is filled with mini cows :D
 
i originally wanted a cow. A dexter. When we started out here, we thought we didn't have enough land for one, so I got goats. Hubby didn't want to goat proof our fence, so I got rid of the goats. Then hubby got on board with the raw milk thing, so we tried milking sheep. The milk was awesome. Milking them was not. We decided the sheep were better for meat--it is AWESOME!!So, I finally got a dexter cow, and she will be bred this summer. In the meantime, I am looking for a goat in milk. I will take the goat milk, but really want the cows milk for the cream, butter and milk. You can do so much more with cow;s milk than with goats milk. If you have room for a cow, and that is your first choice, get a cow. Cows --at least mine, have a wonderful personality. I hate to say it, but out of all my animals I love her the most.

What kind of sheep did you milk? I have interest in that myself.
 
I have romanov/suffolk cross. The one ewe has beautiful teats, the ohter, not so much. If you plan on milking sheep--get them as young uns. Ours were so skittish, once they dried up, we decided not again. We are keeping them, b/c we decided lamb is our favourite meat.

I DO want a cow! :D I'm still deciding if we have the room. Well, we do have the room it's just a matter of clearing trees. :/

I have been thinking for a couple of years now about buying a Katahdin ewe for milk and raising lambs for meat. We have a lady nearby that raises some REALLY nice ones. Since my daughter already owns a Painted Desert sheep wether she could stay with him. The main hold back right now is bad fencing. :/
