I really really like the sussexes too -- honestly when I saw pix of the breed, before I got them, I was not real impressed (they looked to me like they'd spent the night under a loft full of pigeons if you know what I mean <g>) but ordered chicks (they're from Performance) anyhow for other reasons... and now of course I think they're really pretty
I really need to legband them though to more reliably tell them apart -- you would *think* something with markings like that would be easy, except that every time they lose or grow in a couple new feathers, whatever identifcation mark you were using is gone They are nice chickens though.
My buff chanteclers are from Performance too, so you pretty much know what the ones you order are likely to turn out like (They are awfully fluffybutt and loose feathered for the breed standard though...)
If you'd like any eggs of either, this spring, you're quite welcome to them.
I've seen photos of roos with (healed) combs that were frostbit back so hard they looked just badly dubbed, so I would imagine that would be roughly how your BR will end up assuming he survives overall. Too bad they don't have detachable/interchangeable combs, like you could just go down to Canadian Tire and pick up a pea comb replacement to plug in to his head
Hey, I looked at the forecast this morning to discover that they'd improved tomorrow night's forecast low by a whole 8 degrees here - hope it's that way for you too! (and I hope they're *right*) Still supposed to be pretty cold nights for the whole next week, but I guess I'd rather have that than a couple *whopping* cold ones. The older TB horse is getting a bit ribby under his blanket, though, I may put them in their stalls for a few nights anyhow. Stupid winter!

Hey, Morel! I couldn't see your pics for some reason, but I could just barely see the tip of your roo's comb....looks just like one of my boys. Except his is looking more shriveled. I expect he will lose the whole top half of his comb and at least a good half of his wattles, though they don't look painful or inflamed right now. Just black and shriveled.
I think it makes it worse when you think of part of their original beauty being changed, doesn't it? That beautiful, full flag on their heads being lost.
But...the bright side of the coin is that he probably won't ever frostbite again...so I guess its nature's way of eliminating that problem, huh?

Hey, thanks everyone...I started a new project...a snowmachie quilt for my son. It has a rendition of his snowmachine on it...I think it's going to be pretty cool. I love designing my own appliques...painting pictures with fabric. I will post a pic soon...the machine I got is absolutely perfect for the things I want to do!
Pat I emptied my inbox. Thanks! LOL! I also 'dubbed' one of my roos today...not the one that is really bad, I don't even want to go there...but I did do the other, just the tips. Hoepfully it helps. I still have to do the wattles just didn't really have the stomach for it. I have to say...one clean sweep with the axe on a block is a whole lot different than dubbing...ewwww! But it is an experience I will learn from...and honestly, that roo didn't even seem to know I was cutting him...maybe they really don't have any feeling there...who knows! I'm not going to have these problems nest year though...they will be chanteclers!

Morel, I am very excited to see your new quilt. I attended another class today to learn about some of my new machines features. Free hand stitching and some big fat stitches it does. Next week I take the embroidery circles with me. Ohhhh I can't wait. I have never really done much quilting but I definitely see the fun in it.

Tankshill, quilting is my obsession now! LOL! You can be soooo creative with it, especially when it comes to appliques. I have never followed any kind of pattern, but at times I take ideas from three or four differnt quilts and put them all together into my one creation! I could sew for weeks at a time and just come out for dinner...I guess that's the artistic side of me:>)
Freehand stitching is great! You can get so many differnt ideas for how to get your quilts done freehand. The rag quilts ( done in strips) are a wonderful place to start learning to freehand...they are so forgiving and fun to do and the finished product ALWAYS looks great no matter how many mistakes you make!

You sure are making me want a sewing room. Guess I am going to have to clean out my hobby room and go dig around in my storage building 90 miles from here and drag out my sewing machine. I looked at new machines the other day thinking it might just be easier to buy a new one. NOPE going to get mine. But first I have to make room for it. Oh well, will give me something to work towards over this suppose to be rainy weekend.
I guess you know when I finally get it here I am going to be begging for pics and instructions.

I think my family is going to let me commandeer the dining room. We have a nice big table I normally sew on but after each project I usually pack it all up. Who ever uses a formal room anyways? My 8 year old son walked by earlier and called me a sewing fool. Nice huh? Now I just need my husband to build me a cabinet for all my patterns. When I started talking about peg board for thread and bobbins he shook his head and walked away.... What he has peg board all over the garage?
And yes Morel if I could stay in and sew all day I would be perfectly content. Except to feed the hens and water the veggies that is.

The link above has pics of a few of them, the ones I did this fall as Christmas gifts. I will post a pic of the snowmachine one today. It is at it's very beginning stages...but the snowmachine is on it and that will give you some idea of what I do:>) I found a pic online of a snowmachine that is identical to my sons and designed an applique from the pic.

Okat here's the beginnings of the snowmachine. Very basic at present, still needs alot of "cleaning up" around the smaller applique peices. Have to redo the light...but it will give you an idea
