I have a wash tub with drain and water plumbed in, an ice box with a drain and p-trap, hand powered drill, a food mill, and hand-powered egg beater. I also have a passive solar water heater, wood-burning stove, and kerosene lanterns. I still have a long wish list of non-electric gadgets, including a clothes wringer for starters. What non-electric devices do you own, or wish you owned for self suffieciency purposes?

We have...

propane lanterns, bottles, heater that attaches to a tank, atleast 1 or 2 tanks

generator

hammers & screwdrivers (honestly I don't know what other 'hand' powered tools DH has)

axes for chopping wood or ?

woodstove for heat & some cooking

couple of can openers including an emergency one that's on my keyring

old beater/mixer

oil lamps

hand cranked grinder for meat/veggies/fruit (doesn't work so good for grain)

I want a grain grinder (right now I use my blender)

Nice! Where'd you get 'em? That's on my list too.

Sunsaver- You might improvise one. A mop bucket wringer that you keep for clothes washing might work.

I want:
wash tub
hand powered drill
hand-powered egg beater
grinder that can handle sesame seeds - they fall right through my grinder. :(
mortar and pestle- I miss my old one
good machete and axe
p-38, and a hand crank, wall mounted can opener
hand crank weather radio needs fixed- the crank came off.

I'll think of lots more stuff later, but these would be handy before I have my land even.

eta-
treadle sewing machine
tortilla press
solar battery charger and more batteries

Most of you have the ol' solar clothes dryer, too! AKA clotheslines!

We have:
hand tools and saws
washboard and wringer attachment from old washer
coffee grinder
wood stoves - one in the house, one in the shop
kerosene heater and kerosene
oil lamps, oil and candles
a tiny homemade cooker that our son made
hand pump on one well that probably needs attention
pasta machine, can opener, coffee pot, etc.
meat grinder that doesn't work well for meat, more smashing than grinding
foot powered sewing machine that works (never would have thought of that if snapshot hadn't mentioned it)
DIY solar oven

the stuff to make a rocket mass heater that probably won't be assembled/built in this house
the stuff to make a solar heated shower that probably won't be assembled at this house - I got the 'look' when I told DH about it
the stuff to make several passive solar heaters to go in the south windows - I hope they are built this fall
most of the stuff to make three VAWTS - maybe not this year but at least DH is interested in making them, too

What I'd like to have:
hand crank flashlights
AND
the stuff to make a solar trickle charger for batteries (5 watt solar fence charger) or an upscale, real solar panel and components!

I don't want a generator, I'd rather try to use the batteries to run the freezer and try alternatives for refrigerated items.

I have plans for a manual lathe if needed, but haven't made one because I haven't found a need for it yet :hu

Abi, I got one at REI and the lantern I got at Kohl's. It was one of those christmas special items. The hand crank lights with the LEDs are the best.
