To those who live in Ohio, you may want to read this. If you milk goats, you will have to have a grade A dairy parlor once this goes into effect. It doesn't matter if you sell milk or not. It doesn't matter if you are a breeder or homesteader. The wording is poor. You only have till March 10th to comment. Please express your opinion: http://business.ohio.gov/reform/enotify/comment.aspx?rulenumber=901:12-13&enotificationID=14895

Here is what one person wrote to the board:

To Whom it May Concern:

1. The wording about mud needs to be adressed. I cannot speak for anyone else
in Ohio, but I have a lot of clay in my soil. In the spring, and this week
(with all the rain and subsequent flooding) there is ALWAYS mud at every place
on my property!!

2. re: Milking Parlors:

a) The rule, as proposed, means that everyone that milks a goat will
have to have a milking parlor that meets the same standards as a Grade A dairy.
This is TOTALLY insane. A family that only wants to milk a few goats for
personal use will have to build a facility that meets Grade A standards!!!

b) This would place a TOTALLY unnecessary burden on most of the dairy
goat owners in the state of Ohio. As far as I know, there is no other state
that places such an onerous burden on goat owners.

c) This would be "solving a problem that does not exist." Is there an
epidemic of people getting sick from drinking goat milk in the state of Ohio?

d) The IMPACT of this rule on Dairy Goats in
Ohio......................Dairy goats would pretty much disappear from the state
of Ohio because few people could afford, nor would want to make the required
investment. I would predict that 4H families that have Dairy Goats as 4H
projects would no longer have dairy goats.

e) This section on Milking Parlors appears to address the issue of milk
sanitation, as opposed to the care of livestock!!! As I understand the purpose
of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, "milk sanitation" is NOT within
their scope or purpose!!! This entire section needs to be deleted from the
rules!!!

Oh no :/ I was just reading on another forum about the person who got the cease and desist letter about performing vet care because she disbudded goats other than her own. The fight is ON. Problem is, I don't even know where to begin with my thoughts to address it - it is so broadly worded and over-reaching that one couldn't even keep a goat for pet let alone a producing animal for family purposes. It has disbudding, tattooing, housing, and even shearing regulations to mention a few. Oh I'm getting steamed :(
Thanks for posting this - I never would have known otherwise.

So....I'm stuck here:

(3) Enclosures including fencing must be designed and maintained so as to minimize bruising and injury and provide safety for humans and other animals;

How the heck can you minimize bruising? Bruising can happen anywhere and anytime to anyone. Heck, I just bruised my hip on the corner of the goat barn when I turned too soon.....that was my own fault, but I'd probably loose my herd if I lived in OH.

Wow....Sorry for you folks right now...

I hope the people who wrote this come to their senses right now (if they have any!)

These laws are obviously written by some city dweller who has never seen a goat up close and personal. Or a milk nazi.

and another thing while i'm on a rampage....

so remember this whole thing came up not to protect consumers - like the milk drinkers - it was brought about by the fake Humane Society - which is NOT you local shelter.

should animals be treated well? yes of course and anyone who has production animals knows you HAVE to treat them well for them to survive/thrive/produce....

this was brought to you by the folks who targeted Cali and their Issue 2 (was that it?) and then they came here to ohio to try and do the same thing. their goal isnt animal welfare but to make it harder to grow/produce animal products as the leader is a raging vegetarian and thinks everyone else should be also.

the only thing their agenda is going to do is drive production of animal food products out of our country and our friends from China - who will be happy to supply us meat, eggs, cheese, etc.

*shakes fist*

stay out of my barnyard!

harumph
