Problems with my dad

I have several friends with parents who have had Alzheimer's and one thing they all have in common... they turned in to serious candy junkies. That has got to be THE WORST thing for the brain, but they craved sweets like mad. One of the ladies who recently died was always known for having a purse loaded with candy. My friend Jo recently got a call from the nursing home. Her mom managed to scarf down 2 jumbo bags of cough drops and a huge bag of M&Ms. My friend Beth says her mom eats Jolly Ranchers like they are going out of style but forgets to eat real food.

So not sure how you do it, but if you can get the coconut oil in and keep the candy out you could give them more time.

Probably if they get the healthy at their brain needs from the coconut oil, they won't crave the sugar as badly.

Well, I just found out something interesting! The Dr. had taken blood from my father and found that he is deficient in vitamin B12. He prescribed B12 vitamins, but also wants him to get B12 shots. I just googled info on B12 deficiency and this is what I found;

Low levels of vitamin B12 cause damage to the brain and nerve cells. The symptoms this causes may be the first ones you notice. They can include:

* Numbness or tingling in the fingers and toes.
* Poor balance and coordination.
* Forgetfulness.
* Depression.
* Confusion.
* Difficulty thinking and concentrating.
* Impaired judgment and poor control of impulses.
* A decreased ability to sense vibration.
* Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
* Dementia, a decline in mental abilities that is severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Hopefully this is it! :fl

Is he a vegetarian? Brain shrinkage due to B12 deficiency is not uncommon among older vegetarians

No, but I am. :hide He's actually the opposite. He doesn't eat vegetables.

Hmmmmm....

Could be a lot of processed food. They tend to rob the body of nutrition overall.

As for you, just be aware of it and try to get as much b12 as possible. Quinoa has b12 and it is pretty darn tasty. Bean sprouts are also supposed to have b12, but I am not sure what kind of bean. Mung bean sprouts in soy sauce is nummy...I will have to see if that is one of the b12 sources.

Just did a little more checking and it seems the vegan/vegetarian community that there is debate about whether plant sources of b12 are adequate. I would get tested and go from there.

Oh, I'm OK. I've had blood work. I used to be slightly anemic, but my body seemed to work it out. I eat lots of soy (non-GMO), beans, tons of veggies etc. I do take supplements just in case.
I read about what causes B12 deficiency and it could be celiac's. He's always had digestive issues. Or is could be bacterial growth in the GI tract. He does eat lots of processed foods. I will see if I can get him to take acidophiles too.

Oh great. Now my dad is bad mouthing my mom. :( Now I'm questioning why I went through the trouble of moving him back here. :(

Honey, it's like a merry-go-round - up and down, down and up. Hang in there and wear some ear plugs. And, remember to breathe.

I had to tell my dad off about that once. YOU picked her to be my mom, not me buddy. And since you MADE HER my mom, I love her like a mom and you need to STFU about her or I will never speak to you again.

That took care of things :D
