What an absolutely wonderful surprise. It is truely amazing how an act of kindness, be it in a physical gift form or a gift of showing that someone really cares by a simple smile and hug, can make you have that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Rathbone - A House by any Other Name

I was reading Homemaker's new journal (which I adore btw - if you haven't read it you most definitely should). It made me think about what our homes mean to us. Me, I have always loved the idea that a house has a name. You know what I mean; Scarlett had Tara and of course Jane Austin's Mansfield Park.

It is a lovely feeling having a name for your house. My first house was Rose Cottage. (Yes if you read Anne of Green Gables - that was the house's name) I planted rows of heirloom roses down one side of the house. My goodness that was long ago and far away. First husband, first house. Wanna hear something really funny? When we divorced - that was the house I got - the starter house. When I got it back, he made sure he dug up every one of my rose bushes, turned them upside down with the roots in the air so I could see that they were most definitely dead. Sigh.

It didn't feel like Rose Cottage anymore and at any rate I wanted to make a new start. So I live in the same little house but with a new husband and two new little ones. A new start most definitely deserves a new name right? Our "new" old home is now named Casita de Mor-Good-Der. For my non Spanish speaking friends, Casita means "Little House".

I am sure I have explained this earlier but Mor-Good-Der is a combination of our respective surnames. Mor from husband, Good from my surname and Der from my daughters' surname. (So if you are following closely: While my husband is just Mor, and I am just plain Good, my children from my first marriage would be "Good-Der" and my children from my second marriage would ... "Mor-Good")

So...have any of you named your homes?

We call our camper The Broke Down Palace, fits her to a T!

I just saw that you hail from "Evening Shade Ark" - is that really the name of the town or is that what you call it in your heart? Love that.

While we were shopping for houses, over the past couple years, we happened on one that had a name and made an offer. Long story short, didn't get it. It was called 'River's Bend' for obvious reasons and it was amazing. DH asked if I was disappointed at walking away from it and I told him we just weren't houses-with-names kind of people - around here, if it has a name, it's usually an estate. Used to name all my cars, well DS#1 did, and the Airstream we lived in for quite some time with his Dad (Ludo, from the movie Labyrinth). We call the hunting property Deer Camp, but that is far from original

lol...nothing but nothing fancy schmancy about my abode but I just like the idea of naming it.
You do realize how much your choice of "Ludo" reveals about you? We love that movie (also love princess bride, willow etc)

Yeah, it was DS#1's absolute favorite movie, until I got a copy of MY all time favorite as a gift (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and let him watch it. The kid wore out my tape!

I have always wanted to name a house, but we never stay long enough to warm up to a place and 'let the house speak to us'. DH loves to fix them up, then let someone else brag to their friends about all the custom features and great craftsmanship I do wish he'd plant roots and let us fix up an 'heirloom' to pass on to our remaining son/hopefully grandkids! (Not pushing - he's only 11 )

Me too!! Me too!! I named this place we have now. Never named a home before. Never wanted to. This place.....I called HHPR.....for Happy Heathen Pagan Ranch. Of course, we are in a South Carolina bible belt. So we just say HHPR

It took us 1.5 years to finally get moved in together. He was almost by GA, and I was about 75 miles away, in the Upstate SC. So, I felt it was appropriate to name it
