Savingdogs-Saving the chickens

I'd say of the different projects I've taken on, bunnies are one of the easiest. I have not EATEN or processed any yet, but I am referring to their care and upkeep. And I have already USED much of their debris (poo) in the garden already.

It IS awful cute to see the little ones hopping around now. They look like exact little copies of mom and dad, all being the same color.

I hope I get some hits on my Craigs List ads.

Have a happy Sunday!

I hope they do good for you on CL. Sunday I've found is usually a good day for listing stuff. :fl

I will have to say though that the thought of the wild baby buns that will soon be trying to eat my garden will not look cute to me...

I'm a sucker for baby bunnies, wild or otherwise. I have successfully bottle fed wild babies, then turned them loose.

I've already got one response regarding the bunnies! Yay!

How much space do they take up? Maybe I could raise meat bunnies instead of plants. They'd eat my veggies scraps, right? Can they live on my patio?

There's a book. A woman raises animals in the city. I'm pretty sure she had bunnies on the porch... let me find it!

found it: Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer by Novella Carpenter

You might be able to raise them on the patio. A lot of bunnies are fine in hutches.

Mine are in outdoor hutches. Made of recycled stuff. Not fancy, but did not cost anything. I've just raked the poo and dropped stuff into a big ol' pile. I let the rain soak all the urine out, and then I've used it to lasagna the garden. The garden dirt is clay and really needed some organic matter, last year my crops really fizzled. So I hope it improves that.

I have two pair that I paid 65.00 for and they are rare heritage breed meat rabbits. I already have one sold for 25.00 of the kits, so I should make back my cash investment. Of course you have to count what we have spent in feed. But we were already buying hay by the bale. You cannot by it by the little pet store bag. That would be very expensive. But all this would fit onto a patio really well and not be too smelly. The pee does smell but it isn't that hard or too icky to clean. I like taking care of the rabbits. They are sweet. I think you need more than two pair to supply all of your meat needs, but I guess it depends on how many people you are feeding.

We have eaten rabbit in the past and really enjoyed it, the meat is very mild. You can flavor it up however you want. So I'm very excited about the rabbit project, it is going well. My first breeding only produced the three kits from the two moms, but I'm already trying again.

This sounds fun. I'll have to learn to process them. But Auntie, you can have the poo!

I'll look up that book, Hen! THANKS!
