SheriM - Too Stubborn to Stop Dreamin' - SURPRISE!!!

Decisions, decisions. A local store has those "portable" dog runs on sale. They're 13ft long, 7 ft. wide and 6 ft. high...perfect for my LGD girls when they're in heat. It's a really good deal, $80 off. I've been stressing over getting a kennel built before the girls go into heat again and now, for about $500 I could have two perfect kennels. I have the money, but it would run the account down more than I'm totally confortable with. I have some extra money coming in, but don't know for sure when it will arrive.

I know I could build a kennel for a heck of a lot less. I bought some used chain link dirt cheap at an auction, so all I'd need is some longer posts, a bit of lumber, etc. but I'm still not able to do as much physical work as I'd like so I'm worried about getting the kennel done in time.

I think I will eventually build the kennel I had in mind, even if I do buy these portable runs because I was planning to build the runs off the side of a building and have indoor spaces for each run, but these portable runs would solve my immediate problem and I can think of a million uses for them after the kennel is done...heck, I even raised a couple of goats in one the first year we were here.

$500 is a LOT of money, but at the moment, I'm seriously thinking my peace of mind is worth it.

But boy, am I happy!

Went to a small "Odd & Unusual" sale yesterday and came home with...

There were 10 chicks in all. I haven't a clue what any of them are, but they are all really beautiful. The little brown one is absolutely tiny compared to the others. I'm thinking s/he must be a bantam of some sort.

I also got an Auracana (sp?) rooster to put with my two blue-egg laying hens.

sheri, I know how you feel about the dog runs. I had to make kinda the same decision when we got our pup. Buying materials and building vs the prefab and easy. We had a time issue so I went with the pre built welded wire kit. I did get it on sale. The convenience was worth it.

The chicks are really cute!!!!

Tankshill, I decided to get a couple of the runs but, wouldn't you know it, they were sold out. I got rainchecks, but who knows when they may get more in. In the meantime, I found a used one and set it up for the dogs. They're big girls but they'll just have to share the space for now.

Oh, and the reason I didn't have a kennel for the dogs is...

My trio of Buff Orps got there first!

In the first pic - the black and white one looks like she might be Ancona.

In the last pic - my guess for the 2nd from left is a Light Brahma, if she has feathered legs.

We've used old dog runs for "chicken fencing"...... We fenced the blueberry bushes so the chickens couldn't get to them! :gig

Darn, I forgot brahma are feather footed. I'm pretty sure all of these chicks are clean legged. I didn't actually check, but I think I would have noticed. I will check for certain when I feed this morning.

Awww!! Congrats on the new choooks!!!!! I would have been bad, too!!

Guess what I found yesterday....

Kidding had basically come to a halt around here. My first timer, Sapphire, was the only one showing any signs of an udder. I knew she was close but we'd been playing the waiting game for so long, I was quite surprised to find this little gift in the barnyard yesterday morning. Her name is Faith. I just LOVE her coloring. All my other kids are the usual white body, red head of the Boer. Her mother is half Boer, half dairy cross. The sire is a small black buck I think is a cashmire or a cross.
