As requested here, we're going to give the SelfSufficient Journal thing a try.

I'm pretty open to however we want to do this, but I do have one rule:

RULE #1 - Your Journal MUST start with your username. For example:

Nifty - Here's my sufficient living journal!
Go ahead and post other ideas and suggestions and we'll see how this goes.

Cheers!

I love the journal section. Bits and pieces of peoples lives. I always read them even if I don't always post in them.

Reading about each others success and failures, problems and how they were solved or the advice of the other members is like a free book section. And even though it may not be a post about canning or solar power or anything else that most would consider SS, it is a part of daily life. Much like reading the Little House books. But instead of one family, there are many. Each with its on unique approach. There is much to be learned from each and every one.

And they all get personal because we are human. I just try to remember that this is a public forum and try not to put in to much personal info. But sometimes raw emotion takes precedence over good sense.

Yes, I love the journals and the people who post them. It makes all other post in other dedicated sections much more real. Kind of like watching a neighbor solve a problem similar to your own. You walk next door and feel comfortable asking, Hey, how did you do that, and know the advice you are about to get is good.

Hi Icu4dzs,

The thing about it is that we are NOT the Masons. We are people from all walks of life with various morals, concepts, religions, beliefs, and different reasons for try to be more self sufficient.

There are many here who do not believe in the Abrahamic concept of God, and there are also some here who are atheist. So your comment about being naive and ignorant if you do not believe in God is actually quite offending.

Yes it is quite offending - I am a Pantheist, I am spiritual, but follow no formal religion. We have Pagans here, and other spiritual people - atheists have moral values also; none of that takes away from the value of their contributions here on SS, nor of the value of their very existence. With that thought I will now close this thread, as I feel it has run its useful course.

I just had an idea... we could use this as an "introductions" forum too. Kinda matches with the general theme, right? Post about yourself and then keep a journal?

On BYC dangerouschicken started a thread where people told about themselves using a template: http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=95128

Maybe each new journal should have that filled out, or something similar to it?

Example:

Name:
Birthday:
Hometown:
Current Residence:
Relationship Status:
Political Views:
Religious Views:

Activities:

Interests:

Favorite Music:

Favorite TV Shows:

Favorite Movies:

Favorite Books:

Just be careful of some of these questions, someone just did a similar one on BYC and it caused quite the uproar over the religion question.
In the spirit of keeping the peace I would not ask about religion or politics.(not that you asked about politics)
If its suppose to be fun I would not get that personal. I never would have thought anything about it except that I just saw that thread on BYC.
It got ugly fast on that thread and its too bad because it took away from the point of getting to know each other.
Its titled- Tell Us About Yourself- and you can check it out and see what I am talking about.
After reading it I didn't even bother posting because I was turned off by the fighting.

Very good point! I wonder if it would be a bit less of a problem if instead of "everyone post your info in one thread" it was "every thread is just about one person" that way if someone doesn't like what they are reading they can avoid that person's journal.
