the little wild kingdom

a nice chunk of garden got weeded and planted yesterday and even if it was hot out there was a breeze. so much of a breeze i didn't get the bean pods put out in that garden that i wanted to bury so the worms could take care of them. they'll go out eventually in some garden but i'm not sure what i'm doing today. rains this morning so i may not be in the mood to fight the mud - i have a lot of other things i can get done...
 
the last part of the fenced gardens to get weeded and planted with beans. it will go faster than the others as it is the lightest soil garden i have in there and i've already partially weeded it, but we'll see how it goes.

if all works out i get it planted this weekend and can mow on Monday. it hasn't rained much and i've been able to squeeze a few extra days in between having to mow. it sure is nice though that i don't mow so much as before. :)
 
went out fairly early for me and got to weeding. most of the garden was ok except a few thistles i needed to dig out and around to make sure i got all their roots. no fun those, but the rest was ok. i still the back corner to finish up where all the tulips are at - a few hours at most.

i'd not had breakfast but Mom decided to cook this morning so i had a brunch of mac-n-cheese and bacon with sloppy joes on top of it.

sprawled out here and fell asleep in a few moments and crashed out for a few hours. i guess it is a tough life if you don't weaken...

now i gotta get back out there and finish what i started and then water any newly planted beans to make sure they can sprout. water myself too on the way out - us old steam engines need watering too - good thing i don't burn coal.
 
all parts weeded, leveled and ready for planting. i do a little light cultivating of the rows before planting so that i can get the seeds down far enough that they won't pop back out when watering. while this is still a pretty good garden with the soil quality better than most of the others it is still rather too firm to just dibble seeds in. i tried that in various gardens in the past and the bean plants grew very slow and struggled when it got too hot.

so tomorrow should be the end of bean seed planting inside the fence and i can move on to tasks outside the fence (weeding and planting one big garden along a pathway and then getting the north garden weeded and maybe planted too with beans. the deer have been coming through at times so i think that might be a lost cause but never know how it goes until i try. and then the bunnies are running around too...
 
mowing was a bit of a challenge today, but i got it done with a break to cool off. also went back and checked out the stuff leftover from beekeeping to see if they had picked it up yet, newp, called to remind them, we'll see.

since i was mowing over that ways as part of going back there to check on things i had the mower running and took out the thistles that were growing in the road. you'd think the farmers and landowner besides me (which i rarely use that road at all) would take care of it and remove thistles? again newp... grrr! it's not like they don't truck hundreds of gallons of herbicides back there? could they spot treat it or even mow it?...

well anyways, it's done as much as i could do, we'll see if anyone gets the hint... after all the seeds that blow from them will likely infect the neighbors property and farm field more than ours.

in good news the field to the south of us looks good, there was only one thistle i saw today that i carefully went back with the mower and got just that spot. it's a big change from how it looked a few years ago.
 
needed to get some weeding done today before it got too hot outside, but also after waking up early i found out we were having a few friends over for a visit so i promptly went back to sleep because it was too early to go outside and i felt tired. got up and then got out there and finished weeding with a half hour to spare so i could get the dishes done and cool off and rest a bit.

now the question is do the pea shoots i ate while weeding in the garden count as 1st breakfast? because if it did then 2nd breakfast was cookies, and then another nap, then 3rd breakfast...

watering later, doesn't look like any of the chances of storms actually are going to happen. maybe tonight? we'll see, but until then i have to keep the sprouts at least moist enough to not dry and fry.
 
some rain this morning! at last! :) :) :) it doesn't take much to make a gardener happy. :) :) :)

mebbe some more in a bit and today and tonight and tomorrow...

i took the chances of rain and the radar as a hint this morning and just went back to sleep. good call...

Mom wanted to garden and so she was out there and i looked at the radar and there was a storm looking likely to finally get us so i went out and warned her. she decided to work in the rain a bit and since i was warm enough out i didn't worry too much about her catching a chill, but also if it got to lightning i was going to have to go out there and reel her in. she came in a while after getting some plants in the garden she's working on.
