They start to get really big when 4 or 5 tomatoes grow out of the original single tomato. I really think I picked up a mutant gene or something.
This is the third generation from the original 2013 3lb 4 oz tomato. I seeded the 2013 tomato and seeded only the biggest tomato the following years. I still have 1st (2014), 2nd (2015) and 3rd (2017) generation seeds. 2016 was a bust - garden flooded twice and drown all my plants.
These 3rd generation vines are constantly producing tomatoes between 1 to 2 lbs and are just about the right size for tomato sandwiches. They have small seed cavities, lots of meat and have a rather unique flavor - that tastes a lot like V8 juice.

IDK... they taste pretty dogone good to me
Failed to mention - the big ones pictured are for seeding only, I have a box full of 3+ lb for seeding this year. It's been a good garden year here in southern IL. I'm going to have lots of 3rd generation seeds.

Well I have a Long Long ways to go. The world record tomato weighed 8.41 lbs.

But note the similarities with the strain I'm developing. See how multiple tomatoes grow together to make a single huge tomato? I'm shooting for consistency... a vine that produces good tasting & sized tomatoes for tomato sandwiches and fried green tomatoes. Not so much world record setting size. <--- guess I'm just a southern guy... I like my fried green and tomato sandwiches.

I've got my seeder for 2018 with this third generation beefsteak tomato
Son and Daughter In Law came over and while they were here walked the garden. Daughter in law came out of the garden and said did you see that huge tomato you got out there? I said no I haven't been in the garden for 5 days now. She said you gotta come see this huge tomato you grew. So I followed her out to the garden and there sits a huge tomato hanging just a pretty as you please. She said - look at that thing it's a tomato pumpkin.
We cut it loose off the vine with my pocket knife and I snapped a few pictures.

I think I've just about got my beefsteak type tomato line ready to start selling bare root seedlings for 2018. I've been working on this line for 5 years now.

It really is BIG... This is the biggest I've ever grown. I was curious about just how big around this tomato is. So I wrapped a piece of bailing twine around it, marked where the twine intersected with a shape and measured it's circumference. The tomato has a 19 & 3/4" circumference.
My thumbs looks so tiny compared to this 4lb 1oz tomato -:lol
