What are your kids doing today?

Bad day fishing beats a good day in the office. Son caught a few small ones, but it was a wonderful morning

We picked DS10 up from grandma's house, went to a baseball game / company picnic, and dropped him back off with grandma. (I'm off duty for piano lessons this week.)

DS2 picked out a preK activity/curriculum book when I was getting some school supplies. I had picked out the same book, so he was SO HAPPY to get it! He calls it "Panda Book" and he can do pages that he only needs to circle.
 
DD is working on some letters today. Figured we better finish pre-k if we want to start K in the fall. I don't stress about grade levels too much but being a former teacher it helps my planning. Going to try to do a practice portfolio this year for when I need one next year. Not to wish bad things upon others, lol, but I'm looking forward to public school starting so we can go places without mobs of people!
 
I haven't updated much lately, but I'll re-start off with an outright brag. :D

DS2 knows the alphabet, can recite numbers to 16 and count until he runs out of patience (or 16, but he's 2 so he doesn't last that long) :gig He is currently obsessed with pre-writing tracing. :o :love I'm both delighted (because this is very easy way to entertain him) and petrified because my DS10 started doing this stuff when he was *3* and DS10 is very academically advanced... makes me wonder if DS2's education will be equally as difficult/challenging/unconventional. (I hope not...)

DS10 has been watching Great Courses' "Understanding the Universe" and listening to an full-cast audiobook of Shakespeare's "Richard III". Oh, my baby nerd. :love

We are en route to someplace where we can see the eclipse in totality. (Oh my big DH nerd :love ) I'm happy my kiddos are so easily entertained in a car. They're silent. SILENT. For hours. And they're awake. This is unnatural. :gig
 
Have fun! How far do you have to travel? I am far, far away from the totality zone. I think we're getting 60% here.
 
@tortoise I like your kids! :bow Now, would you please explain how you achieved the silent in the car for hours. Mine manages about 20 minutes on a good day lol
 
DH rented a camper so we can follow the weather. He's totally geeking out over this. First leg of the trip is 8 - 9 hours. From there we follow the weather. No idea where we'll end up.
 
@sumi - I'm starting to feel like I've got this momming thing figured out! I learned how to NOT do car trips with kids from my parents. :gig I do everything opposite of them and it works great!


DS2 has an ipad and I put new apps on just for this trip. His favorite is Starfall. He got through the free material already, so I paid for access to the full content for this trip.

DS10 has a portable DVD player. He likes those lecture DVDs which is awesome because there's SO much content/play time on them. Current disc set is 96 lectures at 30 minutes each. Plus the Shakespeare, IDK how long the run-time is, but it's 3 discs. I also packed a couple books for him since we have a lot of unplanned time on this trip. I figure out what his favorite topics are and save those materials for a road trip, and schedule when I place requests for library materials so they arrive in time for travel. I use the max allowed number of doses of his ADHD medication while we're on trips too. I don't use it for him much in summer, but he gets it for trips.

No toys, stuffed animals, fidgets packed. For snacks I take a big carton of goldfish crackers and a gyrobowl. Kids have water bottles and I have gatorade powder too. I'd rather pack light and buy treats along the way. I end up spending less money and there's nothing in the car to beg for.
