What did you do in your garden today?

Got 2 of the feed buckets filled 1 has corn and green beans and the other one has basil lettuce and tomato.

Mom has really got into lentils now. She didn't realize they stabilized blood sugars. I'm glad because it's so much better than the medicinal herbs she wanted to try.

She was "you were holding out on me". I thought she knew
Cinnamon, oats, and bananas also stabilize bs. I make no fat, tiny honey sweetener banana oat bread for a diabetic friend, it always helps him.

No oats for them. Skyrockets sugars for hours. Endocrinologist told them to avoid mostly. Both her and dad. I can tolerate oats but corn spikes me. Shredded wheat also gets me bad. Sugar doesn't for some dumb reason

I got her some nice true ceylon cinnamon for tea because cassia (whats sold as cinnamon in US) doesn't actually help much and has too much coumarin.

I've been talking mom out trying to kill herself lately. She has a wheat allergy. She wants to try barley. 50/50 chance of her reacting to it. She really wants to try a barley lentil bread. Told her to sub the oat flour because it won't kill her.

Wow! I must have my info wrong on oats, sorry and thank you!
I'm impressed on the true cinnamon, I knew that but its so expensive and hard to find.

Wheat allergy is rough. What about rye? MiL developed a wheat allergy, and tried every grain she could find, finally had no problem with sprouted rye. The sprouted barley that was fermented first was the closest before that though I believe. The sprouting/fermenting really seemed to make a difference.

I have all/ most of my herbs, tomatoes, cucmbers, squash, corn, melons and beans in the ground now, and about 1/3 of the peppers. The melons have all sprouted a few days ago and are looking glorious. I still have the sweet potatoes and sunflowers to go.

As a side, for the perennials we got our first ever strawberries this week! Yes.. I know .... you are supposed to pinch the blossoms the first year. I did most of them, but we were so excited to try! I only left about 6, out of 12 plants. They are already sending our runners, im so excited! My asperigus is blooming too!
The mulberry tree is covered in green fruit, and my horseradish has a thriving bush of leaves. The blue berries though..... 😢 anyone have any tips for homemade acidic compost? Peat moss is so expensive, i cant keep buying it every year. I have been using orange peel, coffee grounds, and pine needles. But i also give them a shot of acidic water laced with yogurt whey, maybe old coffee, and kombucha once a week or so. 2 of the 3 are looking good, but the 3rd is struggling hard.

I couldn't find the old LDS document that listed suggested storage amounts for staples per person, but I found this

Wow... that's alot more bean plants than I have room for. Here i was thinking I'd done good because I planted 100.... 😳
7 person family, plus chickens which can eat about 10 lbs a week.... i could have our entire 1/2 acre devoted to beans and not grow enough! 😱😭

Its more that it seems every diabetic has specific issues on grains and no one is the same. Have to count carbs for insulin. Lentils are low glycemic index. Their endocrinologist really hates oats, though. Said too many of her patients have issues with them moreso than wheat or rice. I can eat oats without huge spikes.

Mom reacts to rye. Too closely related to wheat. They can cross (triticale).

She has a general grass allergy on allergy tests so Dad has to mow before the lawn flowers. They live in Eastern Oregon farm country. Wheat harvest almost kills her.

The wheat is the only food allergy at least. At first it was thought to be celiac with her symptoms. It kept getting worse as time passed, though. Adult onset in her 30s
