What did you do to save $ today?

Snapshot, can you post your pear butter recipe in the kitchen section?

Taking a trip to OR in November for DH's parents' 50th anniversary. Saved $200 on airlines by flying out of Louisville on Frontier. Named our own price on priceline for a hotel ($31 for HoJo with free airport shuttle) for 1 night on the way back so we can be at the airport in time and booked ahead on parking so our long-term parking is only $4.50/day.

Made one pint and thirteen half pints of spiced pear butter out of a ten pound -free- bag of pairs. Had to buy a blender to make the Pear Butter-got an Osterizer 12 speed for $9.95 at a thrift shop I walked to. Today I washed my two Schnauzers and tomorrow I will give them haircuts (savings about $80 plus tip). Made a big crockpot of beans with a little ham for flavoring, rice and cornbread. That will be dinner for about four nights for dh and me.
When you take your dogs to someone to groom them do you always tip them? That seems strange to me. But I have never been to a groomer. I would think that if a person is working in their own home the cost of the services would include everything. But if you go to a place where the groomers work for a wage then a tip would be appropriate. But I don't know anything about that stuff.

But I'm a guy out in the sticks and if someone says the cost is $10 you can bet that he's not going to get a penny more. If they think they want an extra dollar tip then the price should be $11. I think women look at it differently though.
It's like tipping the hairdresser. I don't know if guys tip barbers or not. Then again, when I work - it is as a waitress. Anyway, I do them myself now and for the past year or so. Wish I got the $80!

I'll find it again tomorrow and post it there. It is from chickensintheroad but I added different spices.

I used to groom for a living. Not everybody tipped me, but believe me, those that did were GREATLY appreciated! At best, you have to give half of what is charged to the shop, you have to buy your own equipment and supplies, and there is no insurance or paid vacations. And, of course, the gummint gets their cut of what you make. It's one of those jobs (like teaching) that you have to love doing. I only stopped because my body couldn't take it any more.

I found whole cinnamon in the Mexican section at Wal-mart and only paid $1.33 for a pack rather than $7-$10 in the various size bottles in the spice section. I also found a store brand bottle of whole nutmeg for $3.55 rather than $8 at my regular grocery.

Baked a boxed cake last night (a rare occurance) and I had a few too many skillets in the oven with various greases and oils, so I (shh) emptied the smallest skillet of bacon grease into the mix, instead of using my veg oil....don't tell DH. And now I have one less skillet in there because its been cleaned.

Hee-hee, sounds yummy!

I've been cooking mostly from the garden lately and the freezer to get it empty for the fall pig day. I made a pie from elderberries and it was so good that I'll be doing that again and again! It means the whole pie cost me about 50 cents out of pocket (not counting the cost of producing the lard and the chevre.....very little this year, since I glean for the pigs and the goats paid for their hay this year with babies....and I got all that free grain to feed them with....yippee!) and that was only for the flour (about 2/3 lb at 44 cents a pound) and honey (two small spoonfuls at $1.50 lb) and a bit of stevia (a few pennies' worth).

I cut my DH's hair and dried 3 loads of laundry outside. I also baked 2 loaves of bread and dinner in the sun oven. Figure I saved about $40 today! :)

I picked up a brand new, 70 gallon stock tank for $40.00! Guy bought it a couple of years ago to make it into a fish pond, and never did. He just wanted to get rid of it. And, since I had planned on buying one anyway, I saved $60.00! (They're about $100.00 in TSC.)
