We have BABIES! Lexi's clutch hatched sometime last night. I knew something was up when she didn't come out of her duck house for her morning peas. I checked on her this afternoon when I got back from the farmer's market and saw some little faces peeking out from under her. I will head out there in a bit and try to snap some pictures.
A little sad news...I had to tell a local farm to cull one of their duck hens. She came from a clutch I hatched last year. She had gotten her foot wrapped in twine somehow and by the time they got it off her leg had been damaged. Her leg was swollen and not function, plus there were other issues.
Apparently they have a scaly leg mite problem in that pen. I haven't seen it up close before, but I have read enough BYC posts to recognize the signs. I told them everything I remembered about treating for it. I will also send them links so they can take care of the chickens I saw there with messed up feet.
So long Betty Lou. Bert will be lost without you.
To make sure I don't accidentally contaminate my birds, I sprayed my shoes with neem oil and then I will put them in the wash. The clothes are going in the wash and I am hitting the shower before I go anywhere near my birds.
I am usually pretty lax about biosecurity because of all the wild birds that fly in the pen, eat my duck's food, etc... but this is a direct threat and I don't want to have to deal with mites. EWWW!!!
