It's hard work being self-sufficient-- at any level. That's why so few people opt for that lifestyle. You have to make sacrifices... like fewer, if any, vacations, and going out in the rain or snow to catch an errant animal. But we do it because there is such a rush of satisfaction when you can step back and see all you've accomplished.

My fiance and I are trying to work out some sort of plan. I'm sure most people are in the same boat as me where you didn't come into or come from a family with a lot of money. At 30 years old I'm reaching a point in my life where whats gotta be done has gotta be done. So there's this job that a few people in my family work for, good wages. They are working with me to get a job there and I'm planning on working there for a little while until we can decide if we want another baby or not. During that time I'm working on getting my paperwork together for the plumbers union to get an application in with them. Life is not about the money but it takes money to buy property. While I know I can rent farm property around here it costs more to rent anything and everything than it does to buy it. And with the vacations, I've really never been much of a vacation person. If I did manage to go anywhere it'd probably be to some farm show (rabbit, poultry or otherwise) to show off my animals.

I'm a little late, but :welcome. Look into container gardening. There's a ton of info out there and some plants are actually made to grow in containers. Some seeds even tell you they're for container gardens.

We started planting yesterday, a little late I know but still. I picked up some old pallets yesterday that we are going to pull the nails out of and make into mini raised beds for tomatoes and corn and maybe a couple pumpkins and watermelon. Everything else is going in this large (to me) garden area that is a retaining wall. I'll take a picture and show it to everyone.
