Chickens on the homestead

My dad's water buckets never froze more than a light skin of ice. Mine will freeze almost solid (two gallon pails) in the coldest part of winter, 600 miles south of where my dad's coop was located.

Huh, does decomposition in the deep litter add a significant amount of warmth?

If it's working right, it can add 10 * difference on the outside temps at roost level...at least it does in my coop. This is a meat thermometer shoved into the DL under my roosts at different locations.

Plenty of folks on here using DL, so you'll likely get your wish! I can even throw in a poorly made vid of my own to show you what it looks like in the middle of winter.

Morning all! Here are the long awaited pics of my 2 roosters. The first one is Roo-Roo ( Buff Orpington), 2nd is Easter egger. I had to put the Easter egger back inside seeing how he kept getting attacked. So far I haven't seen my older flock going after Roo-Roo but I'm going to keep a close eye on them.

Pretty Roos I have EE I love their looks.

I use DL and have for a long time I really like it especially with the ducks and geese. It's so much easier to go in daily and scoop up the wet litter turn it over and done. Works great for nesting on the floor and for the chicken coop too.

So pretty! I've got a blue salmon faverolle roo and a couple faverolle hens. I want to get them locked up, and after some time set some eggs to hatch this fall. They are such pretty chickens!

I got in contact with my Uncle and he told me to close the back door of the coop and let the Easter egger run around inside the coop by herself but she keeps trying to go back in the brooder box I had them in for a week now.

I love the blues too might have to get some of each color eventually. Does your blue roo have the blk beard like the Salmon does?

Nope. I don't see a comb or a beard on the EE.
