That's one of the things about outside dogs I see around here a lot...those chained to boxes all their lives and barely have any bedding at all in the doghouse, frozen over water pans and chains about 6 ft. long.

Even in subzero weather I see those dogs huddled in a ball on those bare boards or in those steel drums and I wonder what in the world those people are thinking??? Yeah, they have fur, yeah, they'll likely survive it all, but how hard is it to provide fresh straw or bedding and a windblock over the doorway of the doghouse? At some of these same homes, I see they have little yip yip dogs living indoors, fat and sassy, well loved and warm as toast. What's the deal???

My wife's less than 1 year old male Rottweiler named "Baby Bear" is huge now. I remember when he couldn't even jump up on the couch. Now he just backs up and sits his butt on the couch. If I'm gone for any length of time, He meets me jumps up and puts his front legs on my shoulders and I'm 6' tall. If I take him with me in the veggie hauler he sits his butt in the passenger seat, front paws on the floor board and rests his head on the dashboard. Good God "baby bear" is like a freaking horse. I said something to my wife about how big he's gotten and she said yes... but he will always be my baby bear.

I pity the poor fool who would want come into the house un-invited. He has a very deep bark that says "I'm a Big Rottweiler"

the city I live in just passed a new law and says they will arrest anyone who leaves their dogs outside in winter.

My pitbull who is short haired has a heated doghouse. The great Pyrenees won't go in a dog house period. He will come in for a few mins but raises he'll to go back out shortly. I don't think he sleeps at night because he's always barking and running the fences and he sleeps in the sun or shade depending on weather all day.

Guess I'm an outlaw. Next they will be locking my neighbors up for leaving the cows outside too

He looks like a puppy to me. Still growing no doubt

A sheep farmer I know said she gets at least one call every winter from someone yelling at her for leaving her dogs outside. They're Pyr LGD's. They HATE being inside. I asked her if any of the people yelled at her for leaving her sheep outside? They, and the sheep, have a warm bedded barn that they often choose not to sleep in.

I don't think the cold bothers him. I've never seen him act cold or anything. Even when it's in the 20s he just lays on his back waiting for one of us to rub his belly.

Maybe I need to build a barn. Maybe he would use something larger. I'd feel better with him laying on hay than just where ever he decides to plop down in the yard.

I have found a way to force more calories for winter into them. Boiled rice in chicken stock. They will eat it by the gallon! Nothing wrong with fattening them up a little in winter

Nah 20's won't bother them for sure. They do well in those temps. I think people up here get mad when it dips below zero (and they do fine in that too, with a place to get out of the wind and let their paws thaw out).

He might do well if he has a place to get out of the cold that has good visibility. He might not feel like he can see what's going on outside in a doghouse.
