Noir (Kinder) was standing at the fence teasing poor Dusty mercilessly last night. It's a match I want to make - but not now - nex cycle they will have a date!
Something has been killing my quail. I'm down to one adult hen. I go out and find them dead in the cage. Early one morning (before daylight) I found some dead so I took them out of the cage and laid them to the side intending to take care of the bodies when I got home from work. When I got back out that evening - nearly after dark - they were gone. Best guess - a possum or coon literally scaring them to death. Quail will, quite often, kill themselves when frightened by jumping up and breaking their necks on the top of the cage. I moved the last remaining hen to the back porch where Gracie rules. Took awhile for me to convince her she was to guard the quail and not consume the quail, lol.
Next problem - I've got quail babies in the brooder that I'm going to have to put outside soon. I kinda feel that putting them outside will NOT be in their best interest at this point! I've got to figure out something to do with them. Argh! I think I need to set the live trap out there and see what I come up with. Or, maybe just leave the gate open so Gracie can do varmint patrol. She's hell on possums, but I'd hate for her to take on a big boar coon. They are pretty ferocious.
This is the weekend I was planning on moving pigs and maybe even horses - but then it had to start raining again. I want to get the two boars penned up that I plan on harvesting. It's not hard for THEM to move through the mud - but it's hard for ME to move them through the mud. I'm planning on 'leading' them to the pen with some corn, but in this mud I might not be able to move fast enough to stay out of their way, lol. I don't want the pigs that I'm planning on eating to eat me! Nah - actually the AGHs are so gentle that I don't worry for my life around them. But, a couple of them together can still be pushy...
DH is out running errands and I need to get busy. Guess I'll work inside since it's so nasty outside. Ugh.
