Wife says wishing well. I said I don't know what a wishing well is. So I googled "wishing well" and got a few ideas.

Here is what I got to work with. It's about 46" diameter around the outside of the bricks, so a 1/2 sheet of plywood will put a lid on it. I also want the water to be accessible. So maybe a hinged lid or lid with hinged door?

I like the wishing well idea, Such a cute thing to have in the yard. But, definitely make a cover for it, that will keep out animals and debris. I would put a hanged access door in the lid, but make sure that you can lock it so the kids can't get into it. How deep is it?

Well my neighbor who grew up here and cleaned both cisterns every year. Said they would tie 2 10 foot ladders together and have about a foot or so sticking out. He also said the floor where there is above ground access has a ledge with steps down so it's actually about 20 foot deep. He said the water they collected off some of the roofs to fill the cisterns is what he grew up drinking, until the had the well put in. But even then they used the well to fill the cisterns. Untill city water came, then they switched everything over to city water. It's quite interesting to learn the history behind what we bought.

The neighbor across the street grew up in the house we bought, it is neat to listen to his stories about the place.

What about a hand pump? The bucket and rope is cute, but a hand pump would work with the lid fastened down for further safety. I always go for safety first. The hand pump would be nostalgic and you could still build the well house.

My guess the bucket and rope in the Google pictures is more for looks rather than functionality. I would however, drop an electric sump pump in through the "hatch" to water newly planted fruit trees in the orchard. Keeping the orchard watered is all I would use this cistern for. I believe the barn downspouts are still feeding both cisterns with an overflow pipe running down to the pond.

Also explained to me both cisterns are huge and have to hold thousands of gallons of water. I was also told both are brick lined. I don't have any plans to put on scuba gear and check them out though.

Grandparents had a stone lined well, right outside the back door to the kitchen, basically. Rope & bucket were used...alas, no handle & roller. Dropped it in and pulled it up! There was a big nail on the wall to hang the bucket. Heck, a pipe & hand pump would have given "running water" in the house! 😁 I have a hand pump, no shallow well....it sits, unused.
