Seitan makes a great meat substitute. Has texture and everything. Used to be considered a health food until people freaked out about gluten since it's all gluten.

I have family that are actually celiacs and then some that are nuts and think it's cool to claim to have it like so very many people do now (as everyone watches them eat something with wheat). Those same ones don't understand that my mother is allergic to wheat and even miniscule ingestion gives her hives and makes her violently sick and asthma attack, though luckily no anaphylaxis so far. Wheat harvest just about kills her and there are no close fields.

I've had people try and pretend they know more than either the doctors or me about my issues on getting sick after eating bread. "Oh it's definitely celiac." "Oh you have gkuten intolerance." Idiots. I've told them repeatedly that's not it. I can eat commercial pasta just fine as well as homemade breads with extra gluten. I have an intolerance to some dough conditioner or other additive in the commercial breads. Which makes sense since I have other issues with other chemicals that I cannot tolerate. I wonder how many people have that issue.

My baking soda issue is the weirdest as I can EAT it just fine. Get it on my skin and I burn. No using it for laundy either unless I do an extra rinse with vinegar. I use it for cleaning and have to be careful with it. I have ended up at the hospital from it before.

Oh and thinking of ER visits here'sa couple PSAs. Close your eyes if you're flipping open paper bags because skinning your eyeball sucks painfully and it takes forever to grow the membrane back and you have to hope it grows correctly with no distortion. Also don't stomp rats in flip flops as they can twist around and bite leaving teeth stuck in your toes. I live to be an example of what weird things can happen to people.

I have odd food sensitivities as well. Certain bread makes me sick but I havent found a connection between what does and what doesnt - brown bread is the worst and I forced myself onto it for years - cos people told me white bread was the issue. It wasnt. I just rarely buy it now and dont really miss it.

I have said the same thing, it cant be gluten cos the bloody stuff is in the air at harvest and theres no issue. Plus plenty of other gluten stuff Im totally fine with. Breadcrumbs I use for cooking are no problem! I have two friends with celiac and they cant contaminate anything. One will get sick even if someone sticks their knife back in the butter after using it to spread on bread.

Been doing lots of chopping this arvo. A bush was hanging over the fence and I took a couple of little branches down as im not sure if it will storm tonight. Tired now!

I picked the last of my capsicum/pepper the other day :) stuffed ones are extra yum!

As to your snails... no idea, sounds funny.

Been so long since I have had snail garden issues...no snails here, just slugs.
Snails showed up here about 10 years ago. Several different kinds.

I find the whole "gluten/celiad fad" to be totally amusing. Yeah. there are folks who are legit, then you have a whole possee of lemmings/wannabe's following along b/c it's the newest cool thing to do. Totally attention seeking. IMO, a lot of the gluten issue is not caused by gluten, but... instead caused by the glyphosphate that most grains are dosed with prior to harvest to cause the seeds to all mature/dry down at the same time to increase the harvest.

I absolutely hate rodents of all kinds. Have had a squirrel latch onto my finger through leather gloves. Had a mouse run up INSIDE my pant leg. Terrified of rats, b/c they are a larger, more lethal version of a mouse. I would just die if a rat ran up my pant leg. IMO, the only good rodent is a dead one. This from the girl who had pet mice, even pet WILD mice as a kid.

The snails are also out in force. I have never seen them stick their heads into the sand like they do here ? Anyone know what thats about? They suck into the ground as I try to pick them up to chuck over the fence to the ducks. I have opened the gate to let the ducks free roam, but they havent figured it out yet.
What if you put the food in a trail leading out of the pen.

Ducks work for them too. You may have to get some that can fly south for the winter though.

I think it's amusing then f-ing agrravating. Funny because they are actually hurting their own bodies which are supposed to have breads/gluten while not allergic and saying it's good for them. Annoying because they KEEP saying it and telling me I shouldn't eat that burger and fries. Usually in the group with the ones saying I'm murdering a cow by eating said burger. BTW I got my bull to the butcher last Friday.

Mom had one of my brother's friends tell her she was a murderer after she saw the deer and elk antler skullcaps outside. While the girl was eating a hambuger. Mom answered that at least she didn't have to have someone else kill the animal for her as that made you worse then.

I did that and the silly buggers ate their breakfast biscuits then turned around and went straight back in! I love my little quacks, but they are not the most intelligent of creatures. 😆

They seem to have figured it out today though, I called them out again after breakfast and pretended to throw sunflower seeds. They ran around looking for the non existent seeds and got distracted by snails on the zucchini plant. So yay!

@Lazy Gardener I think you asked in my journal but since Im here and lunch is just about done - no, there is no flooding where I am. But we do currently have two tropical cyclones colliding with another low pressure system up in the north of the state. I might get some rain and storm activity from that, but nothing like the flooding seen on the east coast. Thankfully!
