Killdeer are annoying. They like to nest in my driveway

I taught the dogs to ignore them when they were puppies.

Male cat thinks he'll eventually catch one. He does sometimes get the starlings.

Female cat likes to flop down just out of freak out range and watch them. She doesn't hunt birds but is very good against rodents.

Killdeer are annoying. They like to nest in my driveway

we go around and try to fill in nests when they start making them if they are in a bad spot. we do not always succeed in herding them this way, but once in a while it does work. if they put a nest in certain areas they have a good chance of being flooded.

the sad part is that many will build nests out in the farmer fields around us and then the nests are destroyed when the fields are tilled or planted. even for our yard which doesn't have such things going on their success rate at hatching is not that great (raccoons get a lot of them) or the young do not survive (run over in the road, falling in the ditches, etc.). i'm rather amazed they survive at all, but ever since we put in the crushed rinsed limestone they've nested here every year and while they may be noisy at times and give Mom headaches the more tame ones are much easier to get along with and so i try to work around them and disturb them as little as possible. when the eggs hatch i try to say hello to the chicks before they run away so they have some idea of who i am. i'm not sure it actually has accomplished anything, but i try.

i think they're super pretty birdies with a lot of character.

sometimes when i take a gardening break i'll sit and watch them or just sit near them so that they get used to me being there. i've also tried to throw them worms and bugs but i'm not sure i've ever seen them eat them. it would be great if they learned how to eat Japanese Beetles... i have a dream!

the older pole is the shorter one that leans a lot more to the right. the new pole is taller and leans very slightly to the left - maybe in time it will get pulled to the right because that is the direction of the stresses will pull it if the anchor to the left of the pole has any give in it. we'll see... in the meantime it's still Lenny and Lenny will show up in a lot more pictures no matter which way it leans...

After a weekend of house guests I'm back at it. Still putting out feed sacks and spreading hay. I'm beginning to think somebody is moving the finish line. Geeze! Along with all that it's time to start thinking about trellis for the climbers and support for the tomatoes. I've been rounding up PVC pieces just to see what I've got available. Trying to think of some creative trellis designs. I'm easily bored and I want something new and different. That doesn't mean I'll get something new and different - but I can dream can't I?

That golden zucchini plants are coming on like gangbusters. Covered with little zuc's and blossoms. I hope they taste as good as they look. I mean, they are zucchini after all so there might end up being a bit of a surplus. If so, I'll try to manage, lol.
