Well, did a bit of dirt therapy close to the lettuces. Those things are growing upwards. They are about a foot high. Is that normal? I took out some last week but tomorrow, I might have some heads cut off,lol
Still working on the quackie's house. So much and too hot. If there was no sun, I can deal with that, but I dislike terribly being in the son.

1) Watermelon is ripe when the stem turns brown?
2) Are yukon gold potatoes mid season 60 to 90 days and ready to harvest at 60 to 90 days? How do you know when they are ready?
3) Is butternut squash ready to cut loose when it turns tan with no green lines showing?

1. not sure about the watermelon
2. for all potatoes I wait until the stalks (or whatever you call the green growth) turn yellow, fall over and die
3. for butternut squash if there is any green it isn't ready. also use your fingernail to push into the flesh, if it goes easy it isn't ready if it is hard it is done

I am no expert on watermelon...
Potatoes... you can poke around a little at the stems of the plants and see if there are a few to pull for boiling for new potatoes... BUT.... the green growth, stems and leaves, should die...turn brown... and then the potatoes can be dug. They will turn sort of yellowish and then die off to just dead brown. They should then be dug and allowed to dry out for a day or 2 in the shade... like under a tree or on a board or something in the garage.... to "harden" or "cure" the skins.
Butternut and all the winter squashes should be left on the vines until just before a frost. The skin (rind) should get hard so it doesn't bruise or anything while in storage. It will keep a long time if totally cured also. Unless something is eating or bothering them, leave them on the vine. Then cut off with at least 1-2 inches stem so they will keep. Breaking off at the top where the stem attaches will cause them to go bad faster.

The tendrils will turn brown and dry up. The bottom will have a yellow area. Of course there is also the thump test.

The daughter expressed concern the squashes were larger than she thought from pictures. She is officially overrun.....lololol Dad strike for the win!
