Thanks for the great feedback, everyone. It's been greatly appreciated.
I think I'm going to lose the Ameraucanas for the time being and will go with the following six:
* Black Copper Maran / 8 hens + 1 rooster
* Buff Brahma / 8 hens + 1 rooster
* Buff Chantacler / 8 hens + 1 rooster
*...
I never said solar was the ultimate solution. It's not. I simply said that in calculating the return on one's investment, factors aside from just money should be taken into account, one being the benefit any sustainable technology may have on the environment.
No worries. When you said WE, I wasn't sure if you were referring to your immediate family or to garlic growers in general. I assumed the latter because you hadn't said "This is OUR 3rd year growing," but MY instead.
Cheers,

OK. If you insist. :)
I revised the previous list above, and am capping it at 49 chickens (42 hens and 7 roosters) because the cool chicken coop plans I just discovered online are for a max of 50 birds.
And yes, that list is very helpful. Thanks for posting the link.

Given some of the feedback thus far, I'm going to scale back just a little bit and go with six hens and one rooster each of the following SEVEN varieties:
* Buff Ameraucana
* Buff Brahma
* Buff Chantacler
* Buff Orpington
* Buff Plymouth Rock
* Cuckoo Maran

Thanks for the info. I'm going to nix the Barnevelders (since they're lousy layers) and go back with the Buff Orpingtons (which I'd deleted.)
Leah, you've given me a ton to digest. Thanks! I'll respond in detail tomorrow.
Happy New Year!
John
I've never had chickens before and have begun the process of educating myself about the basics by picking up a couple books on the subject. I wanted to ask a few of you chicken experts some basic questions, if you'd be willing to take a couple of minutes to respond.
I'm looking at getting 5...
The theme of this thread reminds me of something I read a few years back about the difference between having Guts and having Balls:
* * * * *
The difference between GUTS and BALLS:
GUTS - is arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being met by your wife holding a broom, and having...
Diavolicchio is Italian for Little Devil. It is also the name of a particular type of super-hot Italian chili pepper.
I'm half Italian (other half Irish), love to cook, love spicy food, and can be (on a rare occasion) a wee bit of a harmless smartass.
The name just fits.
John
This is inaccurate and misleading.
You may not yet have dealt with pests, diseases or varmints attacking your garlic where you are, and specifically for the period of time you've been growing garlic, but this is not a universal truth in the world of garlic growing. Go buy a copy of Chester...
Since he'd already referenced the phrase 'return on investment' in his post, I assumed (and maybe erroneously) that he's aware what ROI stands for. I'm guessing what he wanted me to explain was why one should also take into account the fact going with a sustainable solution "is just the right...
