Can I cold pack broth when I'm ready to pressure can it? Sometimes I don't have enough for a full canner, so I freeze it. I'm hoping I can just thaw it, put it in cold, clean jars, and pressure can it.
Does anyone have an accurate chart that tells you how many pounds of dry beans you need for how many pints of canned beans? I'm just canning pinto beans, and supposedly 4.5 lbs. of dry beans should yield 12 pints when full. But I'm getting 22! I'm supposed to fill the jars 2/3 full of soaked...
We just got a 7 cu. ft. chest freezer. It only came with one wire basket, and the rest of the freezer is deep and cavernous! Any tips on containers to use to keep things organized? Maybe plastic square tubs, or more wire baskets, or.........? I don't want to just start piling stuff in there...
I plan to start grinding my own flour to make my sourdough bread, once I get a grain mill. Do I understand this right - if you grind the wheat berries and use what is ground, you have whole wheat flour, but to get white flour, you need to sift out the bran and germ? I also read that freshly...
Has anyone made any of the breads from the recipes in the Wild Fermentation book? If so, any comments, positive or negative? I'd like to try some (Essene and sourdough) but thought I'd get any extra tips or observations from someone who's tried them. Thanks!
I just got my grains yesterday and have them in milk for my first time. NT says to cover the jar with cloth so it can breathe, and the site where I purchased the grains says the same thing, but
www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com video says to just screw on a lid, and that she's done that for over...
I just mixed up the mustard from the NT book to ferment, and I tasted it first to see if I wanted to add the optional honey (I did). It is SO........HOT!!! Has anyone else made it, and do you know a way to "cool" it down a little? I don't mind a little zip, but man, oh, man, this is way too...
Anyone grow chocolate mint? I have a plant that I want to put in a pot, but I've been dumping my coffee grounds in this pot because I'd been planning to plant a blueberry bush in it. Will my mint plant be okay in this pot with all that acidic soil?
I read on the backyard chicken forum that Lowe's is closing out their canning supplies, so I stopped by today. I got 20 boxes of regular lids for 31 cents/box and 20 of the large lids for 45 cents/box - SCORE!!!!!! Check it out. Unfortunately they had no more jars at my Lowe's, but I'm happy...
I just planted cabbage and broccoli seeds, and cauliflower seedlings. I got some row covers to try to prevent the pests from eating them, but I've never used them before. When do you put them on? Right now on the seedlings? Or do I wait awhile? Please clue me in! Thanks!!
