A new journey into homesteading "pic heavy"

We have had some cold temps lately. His frost bite is getting worse. I feel bad for the little guy. He's a good rooster and that's gotta hurt.

When I was a kid (everyone had fighting cocks) everyone would cut the combs off their roosters. I'm wondering if that would be a good idea rather than let him deal with the pain all winter.

Poor fella! I seem to remember from my days on BYC that people in northern climates rubbed Vaseline on the combs. I don't know if it works or not, but it couldn't hurt to try.

I think that's what I've read also. We've never had issues with frostbite, our roo got a tiny bit once but that was in their old coop. If they have a dry coop with good ventilation it doesn't seem to be a big issue. I have smaller combed birds though too.

He's the only one. But he has a giant comb too. I might try some vasoline and see how it goes. Hes a good rooster. Never flogs kids or nothing.

Go for it. I'm gonna tell ya right now it sux. The trays are pain to remove and install because I'm a terrible carpenter. The heat still over shoots a couple degrees after the cycle because the heat strip is too big. You probably want to use a dimmer to choke it down to 100 watts but leave the fan blowing full speed

Could you use a (or two) metal shell wire wound resistor for the heat source?

2 50 ohms in series would get you close to 100 watts @ 110 volts
