take all the kids with forms of mental disabilities.....and they get no support at home
So you have a mentally disabled child now? Well I do. This statement is completely false.

You can keep dragging up more and more horrible situations until you find ONE GUY that no amount of help could possibly aid, but it doesn't make your argument any better.

There ARE MEASURES Americans, regardless of their situation, can take to improve their health. Period.

You are assuming every one "can do"

there are millions that can NOT do.

simple as that.

All I am saying is small steps CAN by taken by a majority. There is always going to be that ONE GUY. My son happens to be that ONE GUY. He will always need care. Guess what? Even he has to help in the garden.

Because there are extreme examples does not mean those who aren't crippled, one eyed, dyslexic, 80 year old refugees with PTSD get a free pass. Seriously. Having lived in apartments surrounded by section 8 cases, food stamp recipients and people on disability, I KNOW how they live. They drove nicer cars than I did. They didn't work while I was up till 3 am delivering pizzas. They ate everything from an instant microwave box.

At one time I did too, but I didn't know any better. Now I do.

There was plenty of space for a garden at that crappy apartment complex. I sprouted while renting a room in another crappy apartment. It gave me greens I wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford. I know it works because I did it.

Does it solve everything? Of course not. That wasn't the point. The point was health and nutrition. A lack of produce was thrown out as problem. Potential solutions were trashed and ridiculed....even though people are actively working on them right now.

No, you dont' sound judgmental at all.

So, now that you know better, they are supposed to as well. Your enlightenment demands the enlightenment of all.

I think I get what you are saying.

I get what you are saying too. Nothing can be done since everything isn't perfect.

Gotcha!

I never said that. Please read my posts before you misquote me. The question was, I think, why we as a nation are not meeting health goals set for us. One point that was made was the difficulty that people in the inner city have in obtaining fresh foods. No one said it was impossible; no one said it was not worth trying. It is just that we who have more access to information and the ability to procure healthy foods for ourselves should not be arrogant enough to stand in judgement of those who do not.

Do you disagree with that, too?

Yup. Pretty much. Using your judgment isn't a bad thing. GOOD JUDGMENT is a necessary part of the thinking process. Pointing out errors (ones I myself made) isn't bad or evil. Judgment is not necessarily condemnation and defensiveness is a big impediment to critical analysis.

In my judgment, steps can be taken to help alleviate health and nutrition problems in the inner cities. Apparently a whole lot of other people agree with this judgment and have already taken MASSIVE steps to do so. That aint just farting rainbows.

Ok, so being arrogant and standing in judgement of those less fortunate is more helpful than, perhaps, trying to understand what their obstacles are and providing solutions. Check.

And letting them have excuses by enabling people to quit before they've even started is the answer....

When I coach kids' basketball....well even when I train my own kids....I tell them they shouldn't even have "can't" in their vocabulary.

Where there's a will.....there's a way. ;)

I see a trend here.....

Some see the glass half full.

Some see the glass half empty.

and some see that not everyone starts out in the same place.

Nothing is impossible. But some people face more obstacles than others. Unless you have personally overcome these same obstacles, you should refrain from assuming that everyone should be able to do it just because you think they should. And speaking as a person who HAS escaped from the inner city, I am here to tell you that while it is possible, it is daunting. Not everyone believes that they can do it. So many don't even try. Some don't have the brains, the energy, the gumption.

Shall we condemn them?
