Thanks for the recipe, that was going to be my next question!!
I'll just hold onto these tubes that I have and work on refilling them later. I like the idea of canisters, too, I have a couple, but at my mom pointed out, they aren't as sanitary as the tubes. That just depends on how paranoid you are about clean...

Well, one thing about balm is that it is anhydrous. AFAIK, hydrous products (like lotion or liquid shampoo) have more problems with things growing in them. I like to keep my fingers clean, however, when applying balm and prefer the roll-up tubes.

Honestly, you're screwed either way. No matter what product type you use, you will contaminate it with the first use. Make smaller batches and dispose of after colds, etc, if you're concerned about it.

Lotion bars... Well, I bought all the stuff for lotions and then made a batch of lotion bars as a quicky (hospital work gives you extremely yucky dry hands) and never ventured on to make the lotions yet, I like the bars that much. I will eventually make lotions, but they're not as high priorty anymore!
A cheap alternative for beeswax, if you're not against soy, is cosmetic soy wax. Much more economically friendly. It's softer though, so you have to account for that in your formula (I skipped the liquid oils and went with the harder cocoa butter and it's the perfect consistency).

Oooo interesting, Bettacreek. I am really looking forward to the lotion bars, I think they will be great. Never thought past that to think about making 'liquid' lotion!

thanks me&, I will have to play around with this now and see what I can come up with. The only other issue with a tube vs tub is that in the winter when fingers are buried under gloves, the application of the tube is easier (not to say that getting the lid off of either one will be easy with gloves on! LOL

About beeswax being pricey- I have never found a good price for beeswax online. However, I went to a honey processing plant (Honeytree in Onsted, Michigan) and bought 10# of beeswax for $4. This was in 2004. I use it in all sorts of homemade toiletry recipes, including some stuff that I sell, and it is less than 25% gone. So just a thought, maybe check your local yellow pages for honey processors or apiarists.

Of course you could! I'll be adding essential oils to mine for different healing benefits!

Now I'm looking around my house for all the chap stick containers that I can pitch the junk that is in them and refill!

I have some hand made tubes from a friend of my sister's, and I noticed this morning that one of them is thicker than the other, I tend to like the one better that goes on smoother, but I also noticed that the thicker one makes my lips shiny, which is an added benefit (and it probably has a lower melting temp, which would be good in the warm months...)

The farm where we order our meat and dairy also gets honey, and they have the wax for $9.00/lb. That sounded high to me....

If anybody here on the forum has bees, I'd love to take some refined wax off your hands!!! (happy to exchange what I make if you don't currently make anything with it... I'll be working on lotion bars and chap stick first I think)
