How Grandma makes Kombucha
when I dont have a scoby/mother,, I buy 2 bottles of GT's Raw Original kombucha
I boil up enough water like I am making a LG pitcher of ice tea
while the water is heating I put one heaping cup of organic sugar in the pitcher, I lay out 16 black tea bags,
when the water is boiling, I pour it in the pitcher and stir it-- then get a cloths pin--- gather all the strings of the tea bags, lower them into the hot water, low enough to go over the tops of the tea bags and cloths pin them on the side of the pitcher to hold them ,,, let it soak for at least 4 hours ,,, but needs to be room temp to use,
Ok,, then get a jug or LG gal jar-- pour all of the tea [ take out the tea bags] into your jug,, then pour in 1/2 of one bottle of the store bought GT's kombucha-- swirl what's left in the bottle around to loosen all the raw stuff in the bottom of the bottle; this is the good stuff/ mother and then pour it in the jug; do the same with the second bottle;
this is the jug I use

Then cover the jar with a lid but not tight ;;

then put cheese cloth over that

then I put a dark towel over it to block light

to grow a new scoby takes maybe 2 weeks, it will be thin but as time goes on it will thicken up with every new batch you make.
I never completely empty the jug, I just bottle up a gallon and then add more tea--
I save the gallon glass jug that the organic Santa Cruz or Knudsen's apple juice comes in
