Like I said - the unexpected, lol! Sooooo - today at work - this happened. Don't look if you don't like gross pics:

Totally peeled back the toenail off of my big toe. Can you say ouch? Hurt when I did it but after the initial jolt of pain had subsided there was very little pain - as long as I didn't touch it. I came home - showed DH - got the toenail clippers and got started. Plan was to cut it back as close as I could get it - but that didn't happen. Didn't hurt as long as it didn't get touched. Touch it - even with the most gentle touch - and it was like lighting it on fire. So, we loaded up and went off to the urgent care clinic. I mean it's not like I could do anything with my toenail at right angles to my toe, lol. Couldn't even picture trying to sleep with it like that or even put a sock or shoe on. I barely got a sandal back on it. They deadened it and pulled/cut/tugged the toenail right off. I'm now sporting a pretty purple bandage on my toe...Geeze louise! Always something, huh?

OMG! Ouch, ouch, ouch! FEM, hope it's feeling o.k. now and you got some sleep. Gosh, that looks like it hurt.. A lot!

That took some "skill" to accomplish! I mean, hitting something just right to take the nail and NOT the base of your toe Must have slid it under something. Well, there's about 6 months of regrowth....let's see, cramming that into a boot, in only 4 months -- ok it will hurt.


You NEED to retire before you self destruct.

It's so funny - almost everyone who saw that pic responded the same. "OMG" LOL - that was my thought too!

The injections to numb the toe were not so fun either. The first of the four injections was the worst...they got marginally less painful after that. I managed to restrain my mouth to nothing more than a loud "Fred Flintstone" when she stuck me. Not even sure where that came from but I really didn't want to pop out a different "f" word!

I am nothing if not skilled! Actually, I did the same thing to this toenail a couple of years ago. I was pulling something very heavy back towards me and drug it right over the top of my foot (even wearing a shoe) and accomplished the same thing - except the toenail didn't end up standing straight up. When it grew back from that it never grew back correctly...it was kinda humped up. So, this time, wearing sandals, I managed to hit it just on the tip of the toenail ripping it straight up like that. It wouldn't go back down either.... argh!

Doc wanted me to get the toe x-rayed and I refused. She said anything that hit that toe with that much force may well have damaged the toe itself. I had to explain that the toe itself was totally untouched...just the toenail that got caught. She insisted on poking my toe, and squeezing it, and moving it around to see if she could get a pain reaction out of me and nope...it simply doesn't hurt anywhere except the nail itself. Which is a blessing, right? So, we nixed the x-ray and she just removed the nail itself. The poor nurse turned a little green. She was trying so hard to be professional, lol, but she just couldn't quite pull it off, lol!

Footwear is going to present a challenge for awhile I'm sure. I have a nice soft pair of slip on shoes that I can use to go feed - however - they offer ZERO protection against being stepped on. In fact I'm not sure that my toenail wasn't set up to come off by being stepped on the previous evening by Cameo. She's one of the Nubians probably weighing in at about 150. Anyway - it's done now. I am supposed to follow up with my primary care and a podiatrist was suggested to evaluate the "nail bed damage."

Things are getting out of hand here. Surgery in a month or so, ongoing hip problems, and now this? Geeze, I might need to start wearing a suit of bubble wrap whenever I get out of bed.

Think I'll concentrate on working inside for a couple of days. Gonna start by pitting some cherries for the dehydrator....right after I have another cup of coffee. I've got some re-worming to do on Sunday so I'll have to figure out how to do that without being damaged in the process.

Got to stop body damage...you want to function when retired! Maybe look into one of those hard shoes that Velcro on when ? broken? I see people in stores with them. Now, messy on the farm but, may protect that foot! They are plastic, can hose it out/off

ooooh...cherries in dehydrator! GREAT idea. I serve those one day next week. Should have a few to do that with. I'm anxiously awaiting the figs! Had 3 pints of preserves from Fall and pulled one out to eat them, since i'm thinking "figs". Delish. Killing time in a store last week, I found 2 dehydrator screens -- discounted to 75 cents. Now mine. Helps with the tiny fruits.

What do you do with the okra to dehydrate? Don't like the cooked "slime" but, dried I'd probably enjoy. I've read, olive oil & salt -- you do that?

Properly dehydrated there is absolutely zero slime. I've done it with and without olive oil...works well either way and the tiny bit of olive oil helps any seasonings you choose to stay put. It's so good! I'm not getting tons of okra this year so not sure I'll have extra for dehydrating.

My husband ran his foot into the sofa once and ripped his big toenail off. It took 9 months to grow back, just so you know.
