Java. the end.

I read that red maple is poisonous to goats. After I planted some of course. I don't know if they meant bark or leaves.

Some other maples are not.

But I've also seen people describe their goats eating things that are on the poisonous list and they seem to be fine. I don't really get that.

It sounds like it would be discouraging to have things wash away in floods Java. I hope that doesn't happen again! :hugs

SD, what kind of red maple did you plant, Japanese red maple, or the large tree, Acer rubrum?

large one is the one I was referring to....but I have both.

Trees, I gots lots of. :D

I was just standing in my yard this afternoon. Looking at my four little garden boxes. What to plant where? Last year we had such a cool and overcast spring everything was very slow to go. hummm .....

I've never heard of red maple being poisonous to goats b4. I know they're poisonous to horses, along w/silver and sugar maple (all contain the same compound), but I can't find anything that says they're poisonous to goats. So, unless someone else knows something I don't, you may be OK.

I read that too, but I'm not sure where it comes from. Mine ate maple leaves all autumn and were fine. We have a silver maple and a red maple in the yard.

I'll have to try to find my bookmark of where I read that. I never keep track of those things like some of y'all do. I noticed Freemotion is able to back up her knowledge with websites and links. I will remember learning something but don't have a clue where on the internet it was. I make a lot of bookmarks, but I can never keep track of my book marks collection....

But I remember thinking GREAT I bought and planted a stupid poisonous tree. It was supposed to be the kind of maple that gives syrup.

You can get syrup from any maple, but the best is sugar maple. Are you sure it's red maple? If you can post a pic of the buds, I may be able to tell.

lol....it is covered in snow right now. The "tree" I bought from the arbor society....ever fall for that one? They send ones that are about two feet tall.:th It is now reached the grand height of maybe three and a half feet tall but our snow is about three feet deep there, it is by the side of the road. It was "sugar maple" though....

I did buy a row of "sticks" from Gurneys once and six years later they were an enormous beautiful hedge that stopped traffic (spirea van houti) so never laugh at people planting sticks. They just have faith in the future. :old

Well, when it's no longer covered w/snow. Or, you could just go out there w/a hair dryer, and melt all the snow around it. :D
