Some seedlings sprouted! I have a salad greens mix and heirloom tomatoes so far. It looks like I'll be setting up grow lights this weekend.
My basement is about 50 degrees. Will that be too cold to put the plants? Will the heat from the laps compensate? I can leave them upstairs if I need to, there's just more space downstairs.

Mom says it might be OK. You won't get much heat from fluorescent grow lights though. The heat from the ballast will go up.

Your tomato seeds sprouted? I am so jealous. I have never had any luck at all sprouting tomato seeds. So I don't really have any advice there. But the lettuce should be fine at 50. I have leaf lettuce from my last years plants that has been sitting in my yard in containers all through the winter and its still growing. We mostly have mild winters here but we have have several below freezing days.
Great going on the seeds. I have got to get busy. I have NOTHING started.

The lettuce should be OK at 50 degrees. The tomatoes would thrive at temps above 65 much better. For them, 50 would be OK for a "night time" temp.

The lettuce you can leave downstairs, but I would bring the tomatoes up.

That would explain why my tomatoes had such a hard time getting going last year. I'm in Zone 4, so it was still pretty cold out when I put out my plants last year. I got tired of waiting for June and put stuff out mid-May, which still has a chance of frost.

I'm thinking about getting some heating pads, but I don't want to put out that money, in addition to the lights I need to get.

for me with my experience, it is hard to fake out a tomatoe plant. they truly have "their season"

I just follow their season and get super early cold hardy varities and then push those for the earliest maters I can get.

In Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs
Of every head he's had the pleasure to have known,
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say hello.

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar,
The little children laugh at him behind his back.
And the banker never wears a mac
In the pouring rain, very strange.

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
WET beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back

In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen.
He likes to keep his fire engine clean,
It's a clean machine.

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
FULL OF fish and finger pies
In summer, meanwhile back

Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout
A pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray
And though she feels as if she's in a play
She is anyway.

In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer,
We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim.
And then the fireman rushes in
From the pouring rain, very strange.

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back.
Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies,
Penny Lane.
