I've cut my own hair for a hundred years or so, ever since I was a kid. The absolute worst haircuts I ever had were from 'professionals', so I just whack away. My hair is fairly short, and a little mirror that's attached to the wall that I can swing out really helps to see the back to get the angles cut correctly...or sorta correctly.
I had help though. My SIL was a beautician, and she showed me how to do a basic layer cut on short hair about 30 years ago. Once you have the basics down, you can figure out any style.
I agree with Chipmunk and Wifezilla - I decided to treat myself one day - After I walked out with a baaaad cut, I decided that I can look like crap for free. And my own cuts were better than what that gal gave me.
BUT - in defense of good stylists! My daughter that lives in another town goes to a gal that does a great job of cutting.. just a lousy job of coloring, IMO.
